Andrew Garfield Faced Midlife Crisis Thanks to New Movie, We Live in Time

As a movie enthusiast with over three decades of cinematic adventures under my belt, I must admit that Andrew Garfield‘s latest film, “We Live in Time,” has piqued my interest significantly. The story of love, loss, and time seems to resonate deeply with the actor himself, who recently confessed to going through a self-proclaimed midlife crisis while reading the script.

Andrew Garfield openly acknowledged experiencing a “midlife reflection” due to his role in the upcoming romantic-drama movie, “We Live in Time,” alongside Florence Pugh. This confession was made after the film’s world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month. Now, Garfield is promoting the emotional love story at the 72nd San Sebastián International Film Festival in Spain. During a recent interview on September 28th, he admitted to grappling with a genuine midlife introspection (as reported by Variety).

While going through the screenplay, my thoughts drifted towards pondering the essence of life. This reflection seemed particularly intense at that moment, as it often does. Reflections on life, death, love, purpose, time… At the age of 39 and 40, I found myself in a phase where I was both gazing into the future and the past, scrutinizing my present circumstances, and contemplating, ‘What’s next?’

The meet-cute moment from We Live in Time is rather violent when stacked up against other romantic movies. Tobias (Garfield) is introduced to Almut (Pugh) when the latter accidentally runs over him with her car! It’s only later when a heavily bandaged and injured Tobias regains consciousness and ends up meeting the love of his life after she literally swept him off his feet. “I knew I wanted to do it,” Garfield reveals in the same discussion. “It [the meet-cute] felt like the central action sequence, the Indiana Jones action sequence of this film.”

We Live in Time Is About Love, Not Heroes

Combining Andrew Garfield (known for films like ‘tick, tick… BOOM!’, ‘Hacksaw Ridge’) with Florence Pugh (recognized from ‘Little Women’) is an obvious choice. Both are not only Oscar-nominated actors but also highly desirable young talents in the Hollywood industry today. However, it’s important to note that Andrew Garfield will forever be associated with his role as Spider-Man in the minds of many fans.

Since 2012, Garfield has taken on the role of the popular superhero, Spiderman, in three films. Yet, when it comes to his characters in the upcoming movie We Live in Time, the actor is reluctant to call them “heroes”. This is because the story revolves around a couple dealing with the heart-wrenching terror of cancer. During an interview at the San Sebastián Film Festival, Garfield further explained this perspective (as recorded below).

In current society, I find that word challenging. Those close to me who have experienced hardships similar to Tobias Garfield and Almut Pugh would likely balk at the notion of being heroic. My family members and friends who have faced unimaginable tragedies, times when one questions the fairness of the universe, or moments where they wondered ‘How can I go on?’ – these individuals would flatly deny the idea of being heroic. Instead, they persevere out of necessity.

Garfield continued by saying in the same interview (below):

“What truly captivates me about these two individuals is their extraordinary resilience, their unyielding will to survive despite the most unbearable pain and sorrow. It’s a testament to our human spirit, this ability to find courage, that spark of determination to carry on, to live again and again. I suspect there might be people here who are experiencing something similar, confronting their mortality yet choosing life. To me, it’s nothing short of amazing.

The movie titled “We Live in Time” debuts in limited showings on October 11th. Don’t forget to read MovieWeb’s review of “We Live in Time,” where Murjani Rawls gives it 3.5 out of 5 stars and describes it as a heartfelt love story that thrives on its compelling leads, Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh.
