Andrew Garfield Recalled His Awkward Encounters With Will Ferrell And Tom Hanks, And I Can Honestly Relate

As a lifelong movie enthusiast and someone who has had their fair share of star-struck moments, I can wholeheartedly relate to Andrew Garfield‘s awkward encounters with celebrities like Will Ferrell and Tom Hanks. I, too, find myself at a loss for words when faced with the greatness that is these A-list actors.

Since starring in films like “The Social Network” and the Marc Webb “Spider-Man” series, Andrew Garfield has risen to A-list status, and his latest 2024 release “We Live In Time” is currently showing in theaters. However, this doesn’t stop him from having fan moments when he encounters other famous faces. The British star tells tales of his awkward run-ins with Will Ferrell and Tom Hanks, experiences that I can identify with to some extent.

Normally, we’re accustomed to watching celebrities on TV or movies. But, when you get a chance to meet a famous star in person, it’s hard not to act nervously. In an interview with Crooked Media, Andrew Garfield admitted that his fan persona took over when he met Will Ferrell for the first time.

More recently, I had an encounter with Will Ferrell. Up until the moment I was about to depart, I remained quite composed. However, just before I left, I found myself whispering in his ear in a rather unnerving tone, “I felt it necessary to inform you that you hold immense significance for me. There are very few individuals who have profoundly impacted my spirit and perspective on life, and you’re one of them. I hope we never cross paths again.” And with that, I hurriedly exited the room.

I’ve gotta say that I can absolutely relate to having a “kick me” moment when meeting someone important. I could imagine something clicking inside of him knowing he was face-to-face with the man who starred in the most beloved SNL sketches and dominated the best ‘00s movies. In my case, I’d probably be speechless. At least the 2022 Academy Award nominee said something to Will Ferrell. And I’d like to believe the Elf actor took what Garfield said with humor and goodness.

2016 saw Andrew Garfield gracing the 28th Palm Springs Film Festival, where he received the Spotlight Award for his powerful performance in Mel Gibson’s film “Hacksaw Ridge.” That evening, Tom Hanks was also bestowed with a significant honor – the Icon Award.

Following Garfield’s unplanned tribute to the actor from Saving Private Ryan during his award acceptance speech, he shared with Crooked Media another uncomfortable encounter between celebrities that unfolded at the film festival’s post-event gathering.

At the Palm Springs Film Festival, I found myself unexpectedly amidst Tom Hanks receiving a lifetime achievement award. Caught off guard, my prepared speech was discarded, replaced with a tribute to his lesser-known works such as “Joe Versus the Volcano.” Following the ceremony, there was a celebration where I spent the entire night evading him, as he graciously attempted to acknowledge me but I, being starstruck, preferred to keep my distance. They’re just incomparable figures, these Hollywood legends.

In a situation like that, it’s completely understandable to feel apprehensive when encountering an A-list celebrity whose name kept surfacing in a speech not intended for him. After all, we’ve all had moments where unexpected surprises cause us to spill out our thoughts without filter, as humorously depicted in “Mean Girls” with the phrase “word vomit.” Yet, I must say, Andrew Garfield’s decision to honor someone else during his acceptance speech was truly commendable.

Despite winning the Spotlight award for his exceptional performance in “Hacksaw Ridge,” the actor from “Tick, Tick…Boom!” unexpectedly chose to highlight Tom Hanks and his notable films during his acceptance speech instead. Given Tom Hanks’ reputation as a kind individual, it seems fitting that he would feel appreciative when another actor acknowledged him in their speech, rather than focusing solely on their own career achievements.

Given Andrew Garfield’s previous uncomfortable encounters, there was one actor he had mentally prepared himself to find daunting. A hint about this actor: he has traveled through time, returning from the future.

Some individuals may hold a significant impact in our lives that could potentially be excessive. Personally, I’d rather avoid socializing with Michael J. Fox, as I don’t wish to burden him with my endless references to Teen Wolf.

As a movie enthusiast like yourself, I might react similarly or come up with corny film references that I’d love to go back and improve. However, we can’t change the fact that excellent movies often have memorable lines! Since Michael J. Fox is such a renowned actor, perhaps he’d consider it a compliment if you recall quotes from his iconic ’80s films. Here’s Andrew Garfield’s full interview:

Andrew Garfield, despite his Emmy nomination and numerous big-screen roles, maintains a fan’s heart that allows him to experience awkward celebrity encounters similar to those of an average person like me. If he were to collaborate with Tom Hanks and Will Ferrell in the future, I bet there would be even more memorable, humorous interactions. Don’t miss Garfield’s latest film, “We Live In Time,” now showing on limited release in theaters.
