As a cinephile who has witnessed the meteoric rise and fall (or rather, persistence) of stars, I cannot help but empathize with Andrew Garfield‘s struggles to break free from the clutches of Spider-Man. It’s a double-edged sword, isn’t it? On one hand, he catapulted into fame and worked with greats like Martin Scorsese. On the other, he can’t seem to shake off questions about a certain web-slinger.
The way Andrew Garfield played Spider-Man in the movies catapulted his career to incredible heights instantly. But being associated with Marvel’s most successful and recognized superhero, Spider-Man, has its drawbacks. In a recent interview at the Marrakech Film Festival (as reported by Variety), Andrew Garfield admitted that while the role brought many advantages, people always wanted to discuss Spider-Man instead of his other work.
In the past ten years, Garfield has held a prominent position in Hollywood, being sought after for desirable roles and even being nominated for numerous awards as part of a festival jury. However, according to him, there have been significant challenges in escaping the influence of his brief stint as a Marvel superhero.
“I had to work very hard to have less people ask questions about Spider-Man.”
Garfield mentioned that he’s continuing to work on his superhero films, acknowledging that the creative process can be flawed.
Indeed, others might consider it a minor expense considering the extraordinary events that transpired later, among which was collaborating with exceptional talents such as Martin Scorsese. Interestingly, it appeared that having a Spider-Man actor in his film, “Silence,” added value to Scorsese’s project.
I’m thankful for that period, as it potentially opened up an opportunity for me to collaborate with Martin Scorsese immediately afterward. I believe Scorsese managed to bring to life a passion project featuring the actor who played Spider-Man in the title role of a Jesuit priest in 17th-century Japan. It’s truly wonderful that such a film came into existence, thanks in part to the Spider-Man character.
Andrew Garfield Has Returned to Spider-Man Again
Despite Garfield previously attempting to evade queries about Spider-Man, any chance he had of avoiding Marvel’s web was lost when he once again donned the one-piece suit of Peter Parker’s alter-ego in Marvel Studios’ blockbuster film “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (2021). Being one of three Spider-Men featured in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s multiverse movie, Garfield’s return has sparked demands for another solo film as the character and for him to rejoin Tom Holland’s future Spider-Man projects, as well as “Avengers: Secret Wars.
But it’s not necessary to travel far to realize that Garfield’s range extends well beyond the realm of Marvel films. Following his debut as Peter Parker, he deliberately chose projects to reshape his career and create a bit of separation from big-budget productions. In 2016 alone, he starred in Mel Gibson’s war drama Hacksaw Ridge, playing real-life hero Desmond Doss, and in Martin Scorsese’s Silence. He garnered exceptional praise and numerous awards for his lead role in the musical biography Tick, Tick… Boom! as Jonathan Larson. Additionally, he received more accolades for the TV series Under the Banner of Heaven.
Even though Garfield can’t fully step away from his superhero roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he has undeniably demonstrated his versatility beyond the realm of comic book characters. Yet, he’ll continue to field questions about his superhero days for quite some time.
