Andrew Scott’s Off-Broadway production of Vanya is adding more dates to the run due to demand.
Starting a day earlier than initially planned, Scott’s solo performance piece, which he also co-created, will now commence performances on March 10 instead of March 11, and will run an extra week, concluding on May 11, 2025. Originally slated to open on March 16, the play is now set to debut at the Lucille Lortel Theatre a day earlier.
For the first time in America, the stage production of “Uncle Vanya,” where Scott assumes multiple roles in his own adaptation of Chekhov’s timeless drama, will make its debut. Following a successful run at London’s West End in 2023 and a live-recorded film version, this show is now set to grace the stages of New York City.
Scott collaborated with adapter Simon Stephens, set designer Rosanna Vize, and director Sam Yates to create the show. This week, rehearsals for the production started in London.
The play features eight characters, including an elderly professor and his younger spouse, who travel to their countryside property managed by relatives Vanya and Sonya. Throughout the story, local physician Astrov makes visits, and romantic overtures ensue, culminating in a climax when the professor expresses his desire to sell the estate that has supported his lifestyle for years, causing tension among the characters.
Known for his leading parts in shows like Fleabag, Ripley, All of Us Strangers (and more), Scott is also recognized for his stage performances. He’s acted in plays such as Hamlet, Present Laughter, and Sea Wall on the West End. He made his Broadway debut back in 2006, starring alongside Julianne Moore and Bill Nighy in David Hare’s The Vertical Hour.
Apart from Vize, the creative team behind Vanya is composed of lighting design by James Farncombe, sound design by Dan Balfour, video design by Jack Phelan, direction for movement by Michela Meazza, musical composition by Kelly Moran, and costume design by Natalie Pryce.
The run is being produced by Wessex Grove, Gavin Kalin Productions, and Kater Gordon, while Wagner Johnson Productions serves as the executive producers.
