Andy Samberg Shares Update on His Mom’s Adoption Story After ‘Finding Your Roots’ Appearance

Andy Samberg recently discussed his mother’s adoption tale on the latest installment of Amy Poehler’s “Good Hang” podcast.

Back in 2019, I stumbled upon an episode of Finding Your Roots that revealed a life-changing secret for me and my mom, Marjorie Marrow. You see, she’d been adopted, and for years, she’d been searching for her birth parents. In this episode, we finally uncovered their identities, bringing us one step closer to understanding our family history.

In the episode, it was revealed that Marrow’s biological parents had a short-lived relationship before splitting up, and remarkably, both families possessed an identical photo of them together.

During the podcast, Samberg shared that without knowing about it, each of them separately searched through the remaining belongings of her biological parents and found the identical photo of the two of them. This photograph was taken during their short-lived encounter… from a date in San Francisco.

Marrow’s parents got together in the San Francisco Bay Area, where they eventually brought up Marrow, as well as Samberg’s father and his other siblings, who is known for being an alumnus of Saturday Night Live.

Samberg revealed that he and his family uncovered a explanation for why Marrow struggled to locate her birth parents prior to their appearance on ‘Finding Your Roots’. This PBS series is fronted by Henry Louis Gates Jr., who investigates the American histories and backgrounds of various families, as well as famous guests.

During the broadcast, it revealed where Samberg’s mother had been adopted from – it was the same place featured in the movie ‘Three Identical Strangers’. This adoption agency is now defunct, as it shut down in 2004.” (Samberg was referring to a documentary released in 2018 that traced the story of identical triplets who were unknowingly separated at birth by the Louise Wise Adoption Agency.)

He went on to say, ‘That’s probably why we couldn’t locate any documents or information regarding it, as they seem to have vanished.'”

Or more casually:

“He explained further, ‘Probably because the records just vanished, that’s why we couldn’t find anything about it.’

While Samberg was unsure as to the reason behind both sets of his birth grandparents’ families having the same picture, he proposed a couple of ideas to Poehler.

He mentioned, “Perhaps they had anticipated this very situation might occur, hoping she’d discover them again. Otherwise, it could simply mean they both cherished their shared moments greatly.

Samberg explained that perhaps his mother’s biological family kept the photograph as a tribute out of respect for different generations. He analogized, “Just like you wouldn’t erase past connections from your social media accounts, you hold onto them because they held significance in the past.
