As a gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in the world of movies and their genres, I must say that Angelina Jolie‘s perspective on Maleficent being a rom-com is quite intriguing, to say the least! While I can appreciate her unique take on the character’s relationships, I have to respectfully disagree.
Angelina Jolie will once more captivate audiences when her movie “Maria,” set for release in 2024, debuts in select cinemas in November. After a brief theater run, it will become accessible to Netflix subscribers in December. This biographical and psychological drama fits perfectly with the Oscar-winning actress, and early reviews have been lauding her portrayal of renowned opera singer Maria Callas. Given her strong association with dramas, some might ponder if she’d venture into a romantic comedy. Intriguingly, she has expressed thoughts on this very topic, even mentioning “Maleficent” in the process.
While walking the red carpet for the LA premiere of Maria at AFI Film Fest, the actress and mother of six caught up with E! News, which shared a portion of the interview to Instagram. Given the chance to speak with Angelina Jolie, the entertainment company asked her if she’d ever consider starring in a romantic comedy. After carefully considering the question, the star explained how she believes Maleficent has already granted her that opportunity in some respects:
It seems unlikely that I would excel in a romantic comedy, as my experience leans more towards films like Maleficent where I perceived a romantic element between Maleficent and Diaval, which might have been a unique interpretation of mine.
I’m afraid, Ms. Jolie, your perspective doesn’t align with mine in this case. While Maleficent is undeniably one of Disney’s stellar live-action adaptations, it falls far short of being a rom-com. The film’s dark and somber tone deviates significantly from the typical rom-com, which leans more towards lightheartedness and humor, as suggested by the “comedy” in its genre title.
Indeed, it’s worth noting that Maleficent primarily lacks substantial romantic relationships beyond the initial scenes where the title character develops affection for Stefan, who subsequently deceives her. Although there seems to be a deep bond between Maleficent and Diaval later in the story, their relationship appears more like friendship or camaraderie rather than romance, despite speculation from the lead actress.
Still, it’s mind-blowing that someone with the Eternals star’s talent and decades in the industry has never appeared in a straight-up rom-com. Now, that the genre is on the rise — thanks to box office hit Anyone But You and other flicks — perhaps the Tony-winning producer will reconsider and stretch her acting chops in a fun and swoon-worthy movie for once. After all, if anyone can make the list of best romantic comedies of all time, it’s Angelina Jolie!
