As a gamer who has traversed countless virtual worlds and cultures, I can truly appreciate the real-life journey of Angelo Baque and his latest Champion collaboration. Having grown up with the brand myself, it’s heartening to see its evolution into a platform for celebrating diverse roots and Indigenous cultures.
Angelo Baque initially teamed up with Champion on a “Senior Thesis” collection in December 2022, marking the Awake NY designer’s first collaboration with the brand. In this project, he reimagined Champion’s Reverse Weave crewneck sweatshirt, incorporating a school-themed concept in conjunction with three artists. Baque’s initial partnership aimed to stimulate creativity among future generations. His upcoming Champion collaboration, launching worldwide this week, serves as a tribute to his Ecuadorian heritage and Indigenous Latin American culture.
As a proud Ecuadorian gamer, I’m excited to showcase this collection, which highlights our diverse community and reminds everyone that Ecuador is home to a multitude of unique individuals with varied tales and backgrounds. Yet, despite our differences, we all share a strong sense of pride in our heritage.
This assortment encompasses numerous designs inspired by traditional Indigenous weaving methods, alongside garments showcasing relic prints that highlight the distinctive clothing elements of ancient Mesoamerican civilizations. Leather jackets in black exhibit “Champion” emblazoned across the body in cursive script, while accompanying pants bear Baque’s name on the back pocket in a comparable typeface. Additionally, loungewear pieces such as hoodies, long sleeves, and t-shirts feature vibrant references to Baque’s heritage scattered throughout.
The advertising project, filmed and overseen by Baque, showcases a variety of Ecuadorian families in a collection of images. It underscores the diversity of their experiences and identities, suggesting that they are not one homogeneous group but rather a vibrant tapestry.
The Angelo Baque x Champion collection, which is their latest release, is planned to debut during an exclusive event at Dover Street Market Ginza in Tokyo on October 11th. Once this event takes place, the collection will be available for purchase at the Awake NY store starting October 19th.
