Angus lives! The Ark’s Ryan Adams on His "Different," Darker Look in Season 2 [Exclusive]

As a devoted fan of The Ark, I’ve been thoroughly captivated by the evolution of Angus Medford (Ryan Adams) throughout the show’s second season. His near-death experience and the consequences that followed have taken his character on an intriguing journey that’s left me eagerly anticipating each new episode.

Among the characters on “The Ark,” none express science fiction enthusiasm as genuinely and charmingly as the adored couple on the SYFY series. Alicia Nevins, an engineer from “Ark One” played by Stacey Read, and Angus Medford, the shy, plant-loving crew member portrayed by Ryan Adams, developed a sweet, awkward romance last season. Unfortunately, just as their relationship blossomed, the spaceship they were all relying on to save them faced dangerous plots of its own.

In “The Ark”‘s second season, we discover that Angus has been significantly affected by brushing with death. Having been impaled by glass and narrowly surviving the chaotic explosion that destroyed Ark One at the end of last season, Angus starts to regain consciousness in the latest episode titled “Kill or be Killed.” Notably, Alicia, who miraculously survived the blast unscathed, remains by his side throughout this episode.

As a longtime fan of science fiction shows, I’m always on the lookout for new and exciting series that push the boundaries of the genre. And when I stumbled upon “The Ark” last year, I was immediately hooked. The twists and turns of this post-apocalyptic drama kept me guessing week after week.

The Ark‘s Ryan Adams on why Season 2 “can go a bit darker”

Angus’s screen time is set to increase with the upcoming third episode of the season, but based on what we’ve seen so far, there’s something distinct about him. It could be his untamed new hairdo or simply the fact that he’s more laid-back than the anxious and cautious character we knew from Season 1, who spent most of his time in the basement tending to his plants.

Adams admitted to SYFY Wire that returning for Season 2 felt like portraying a different character at times due to his real-life near-death experience, which significantly influenced his beloved good-guy persona.

Adams added, “He’s truly unique, as you’ve observed. Yet considering his past experiences, it’s no surprise. He came perilously close to losing his life – an ordeal that leaves an indelible mark on anyone, especially a young person.” I believe it’s beneficial for me to have played Angus differently this season, as it’s all about progression and character development.

In the forthcoming episodes of “The Ark” Season 2, there’s a newfound sense of necessity as Captain Sharon Garnet (Christie Burke) and her team quickly adapt to face the dangers lurking within and without their spacecraft.

As a fan, I’m excitedly sharing that this new season may delve deeper into the darker aspects of the show, surpassing the intensity of Season 1. Furthermore, the entire storyline unfolds within a mere two or three weeks’ timeframe. Brace yourselves for an adrenaline-pumping ride as our beloved characters face numerous life-threatening situations in a compressed timeframe. At times, they may feel all hope is lost and believe their end is near. However, it’s not just about their survival; it’s about rediscovering that hope and understanding the true reason behind their struggle – to restore humanity.

In this week’s episode, it’s likely that Angus owes his life to the cunning actions of Kelly Fowler (Samantha Glassner), a mysterious stowaway from the suspicious sister ship, Ark 15. Fresh out of a criminal trial, Kelly has amassed an extensive record of misdeeds. Her lengthy list of transgressions includes multiple homicides and an attempted assassination on Angus himself.

In an unexpected turn of events, it is now Kelly’s nanite-infused blood that saves Angus as he lies unconscious on the surgery table. After regaining consciousness, Angus is left feeling torn and uneasy, knowing that a constant part of Kelly is now integrated into his heartbeat through his veins.

After all the experiences he’s had, Adams cautioned, “It would be quite simple-minded to assume, ‘Ah, Angus is back, and he’s unchanged!'” He shared his intention to alter Angus’s character and push it further. In an email, he suggested enhancing the character’s appearance by making his hair more disheveled and wild to symbolize his mental turmoil. The team welcomed these ideas, allowing Adams to add depth and maturity to Angus.

After Angus regained his life and is now prospering at the expense of the couple’s most dreadful nightmare, will things return to normal for him and Alicia? Despite his newly gained perspective, Angus may still have more growing up to do as Kelly’s abilities on the Ark One start to develop in peculiar ways.
