As a cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of reality TV and true crime documentaries, I must say that my experience with Anna Delvey on Dancing with the Stars is a unique one. While it’s clear that many viewers have found entertainment value in her participation, I can’t help but feel a sense of unease.
Participating in “Dancing with the Stars” might have been a pleasant journey for numerous celebrity contestants, but Anna Delvey (born Anna Sorokin) did not share the same experience. During the 33rd season’s episode on September 24, Delvey was one of the first two stars to be eliminated, along with Tori Spelling from “Beverly Hills, 90210.” Unlike Spelling who had positive remarks about her time on the show, Delvey expressed a different perspective. In an interview with NBC News, Delvey, who faced criticism for being cast, claimed that “Dancing with the Stars” was using her for attention rather than offering a genuine experience.
I believe the show manipulated me, using my presence to boost ratings without any intention of allowing me room to develop. They seemed more interested in exploiting me for attention rather than genuinely helping me grow. It was underhanded of them to make me feel incapable and foolish, all while I was improving, yet they chose to ignore my progress.
On previous occasions, Delvey has expressed negative opinions about the show as well. After being eliminated alongside partner Ezra Sosa during “Oscar Night,” Dancing With The Stars co-host Julianne Hough asked Delvey what she would be taking away from her experience on the series. Delvey’s response was a simple “Nothing.” This answer left fans of the dancing competition feeling disgruntled, as they voiced their dissatisfaction with Delvey’s attitude on social media.
During a chat on Spelling’s podcast, misSPELLING, on September 28th, Delvey stood firm by her statement, declaring it as “the truth.” She explained that despite following instructions, she was still turned away, which she found to be an attempt at embarrassment. Interestingly, both she and Spelling left the competition early, while Eric Roberts and Reginald VelJohnson, who had the lowest scores, remained. Despite not being part of the rest of the season, Delvey expressed her hope that VelJohnson would win the mirrorball trophy.
What’s Next for Anna Delvey?
Anna Delvey, who gained notoriety after Netflix released their 2022 show “Inventing Anna“, faced eight charges including grand larceny and theft of services, which led to her conviction in 2019. Upon her release from prison in 2021, she was taken into custody by immigration officials, spending another 18 months incarcerated. In 2022, Delvey was released on house arrest and has since relocated to New York’s Hudson Valley. However, as the conditions of her house arrest eased, she was granted permission to travel to Los Angeles for a series appearance, during which she wore an ankle monitor.
Although Delvey’s time on DWTS was brief, she’s not finished in the spotlight yet. In a conversation with Newsweek, she mentioned her efforts to retell her story: “I’m working to regain control of my own tale.
For some time now, I’ve been working on a full-length documentary destined for a significant broadcasting platform. It’s something I can hardly wait to share with all of you. My tale has often felt like it’s been narrated by others, so I’m thrilled to have the chance to retake control of my own narrative and finally tell my story in my own words.
The series titled “Inventing Anna” received recognition for Julia Garner with Emmy Awards and Golden Globe nominations, and it can now be streamed on Netflix. Meanwhile, the popular show “Dancing with the Stars” broadcasts fresh episodes every Tuesday via ABC and Disney+. The following day, these episodes become available to stream on Hulu.
