Anne Hathaway Revealed Adele Lim Will Direct Princess Diaries 3. Here’s Why She’s The Perfect Pick

As a gamer who grew up in the early 2000s, I can’t help but feel like my childhood just got a major upgrade! The announcement of Adele Lim as the director for Princess Diaries 3 is nothing short of magical. For years, I’ve been longing to return to Genovia and catch up with Mia and her loved ones, and it looks like that dream might just come true!

Girls, dreams do come true, and that was proven today by the fact that Princess Diaries 3 just took a massive step forward by finding its director. While there’s been chatter about a threequel for years, and Anne Hathaway just celebrated Princess Diaries 2 turning 20, there wasn’t much movement on the anticipated third film. However, now Hathaway herself has confirmed that Adele Lim will be directing the upcoming flick, and I can’t get over how perfect this choice is!

For quite some time, the cast of “The Princess Diaries” has been bombarded with questions about a potential third film, but updates were scarce. However, we now have a significant piece of news. Additionally, Mia’s actress revealed that Disney and Somewhere Pictures are involved in the production of the movie, while also sharing that Adele Lim will be directing it.

To provide some context, Lim is a multi-talented individual serving as director, producer, and writer. She has contributed to films such as Crazy Rich Asians, Raya and the Last Dragon, and Joy Ride. The upcoming film, Princess Diaries 3, will be her second time directing, and I’m genuinely thrilled for her and this exciting project!

Here’s Why I’m So On Board With Adele Lim Directing Princess Diaries 3

Adele Lim’s extensive filmography, particularly her work on the beloved romantic comedy “Crazy Rich Asians” and my favorite comedy of 2023, “Joy Ride,” makes her an ideal choice to direct the upcoming “Princess Diaries” movie, featuring Anne Hathaway.

“Joy Ride” is an outrageously funny and sincere movie centered around female camaraderie. Given that “The Princess Diaries 3” will unfold about two decades after its second installment, with the audience now being 20 years older than they were in 2004, a more sophisticated and adult-oriented storyline, while still retaining humor and charm, seems essential. If Lim, who was behind “Joy Ride”, can infuse some of her unique charm from that film into “The Princess Diaries”, it may very well receive the revitalizing touch it needs.

Apart from directing, producing, and scriptwriting for “Joy Ride,” Lim has also penned the screenplay for “Crazy Rich Asians.” What I appreciate about the 2018 romantic comedy is its departure from the typical origin story. Instead, it delves into the lives of a well-established and serious couple. Additionally, the film beautifully explores how family dynamics influence their relationship. Considering that “The Princess Diaries 3” might pick up with Mia already reigning as queen and presumably still with Chris Pine’s Nicholas, I envision the movie carrying similar tones and themes as “Crazy Rich Asians.

All in all, it’s fantastic that Adele Lim has been given the opportunity to direct such a large-scale film, and her past work certainly justifies her selection for this role.

With such an exceptional creative figure now leading the movie, let’s keep our fingers crossed in hope that Julie Andrews agrees to reprise her role and Chris Pine returns to the series that marked his cinematic debut (fun fact: Princess Diaries 2 was his initial film). Once we have everyone back, including the original cast, we’ll be all set to journey back to Genovia for another captivating tale about the queen and her cherished family.

Currently, there’s no set release date for The Princess Diaries 3. In the meantime, you can enjoy streaming the first two movies on Disney+. Rest assured, we will update you as soon as we get more information about this eagerly anticipated movie being directed by a talented filmmaker.
