As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for nostalgia, this news about Leonard Asper’s Anthem Sports and Entertainment acquiring Hollywood Suite has me jumping for joy! Growing up, I remember eagerly waiting for my turn to watch those classic movies on our family’s old CRT TV. From Tom Cruise’s iconic “Cocktail” to the comedic adventures of Turner & Hooch, these films were part of my formative years.
Leonard Asper’s company, Anthem Sports and Entertainment, has purchased Hollywood Suite – a small, independent Canadian broadcaster offering four high-definition movie channels.
The specific details of the agreement remain undisclosed, but if regulatory approvals are granted, Anthem will acquire the rights to broadcast commercial-free movie channels featuring films primarily from the 70s, 80s, 90s, and early 2000s. These channels are expected to reach approximately 10 million homes in Canada.
Movies from the classic Hollywood era featured on the Hollywood Suite menu consist of Tom Cruise’s “Cocktail,” “The Abyss,” the comedic film “Turner & Hooch” with Tom Hanks, and “The Seven Year Itch,” directed by Billy Wilder, starring Marilyn Monroe.
Under the leadership of long-term executive from Canwest TV, Asper, Anthem Sports & Entertainment functions as a parent company, with control over Gravitas Ventures, AXS TV, HDNet Movies, Impact Wrestling, Fight Network, TNA Wrestling, and GameTV, among other properties.
Aspire intends to merge Gravitas Ventures, which was acquired in 2021, and HDnet Movies, housing blockbuster classics and timeless films, with Hollywood Suite to create a dedicated movie service. This move aims to strengthen the premium film selection of the company on both sides of the border.
David Kines, president and co-founder of Hollywood Suite, will remain in charge. According to David Kines, this deal allows both parties to enhance their movie purchasing and advertising abilities, as they transition from conventional television platforms towards the rapidly expanding realms of streaming and on-demand services. (The Hollywood Reporter was informed about this.)
Kines mentioned that we’ll leverage our individual expertise in curation to establish and expand superior channels throughout North America,” Kines explained. Prior to founding Anthem in 2010, Asper served as CEO of Canwest Global Communications Corp. for nearly a decade.
In a statement, Asper shared that Anthem aims to deliver innovative and distinct content tailored for an extensive range of enthusiastic communities, and acquiring Hollywood Suite significantly strengthens this approach.
