As a fan who appreciates both the depth and humor that Anthony Mackie brings to his roles, I find myself thoroughly charmed by this heartwarming tale of holiday spirit and camaraderie. In a career filled with iconic performances and unforgettable characters, Mackie’s decision to steal a Christmas sweater from “The Night Before” set feels like a testament to the unique bond he shares with his co-stars, particularly Seth Rogen.
Throughout his career, Anthony Mackie has delivered standout performances in numerous big-Marvel films, earning him the title of a well-known figure in many households as Sam Wilson, the latest Captain America. Contrary to the legendary status of these movies, Mackie appears uninterested in any memorabilia from the sets, such as costumes or props, choosing not to take souvenirs for his personal collection. However, it seems that he did acquire one item from a movie he worked on with Seth Rogen, and this unusual memento turned out to be some festive clothing.
The Captain America: Brave New World star got into the Christmas spirit this season by posting a photo of himself on Instagram in front of his decorated tree. He was notably wearing a familiar looking red Christmas sweater with a Santa Claus on it, which fans may have noticed was from the movie The Night Before. He confirmed in his caption that this was a rare instance of him stealing from set, and shouted out co-star Seth Rogen in the post. You can see the photo below:

Previously, “The Night Before” – a holiday-themed comedy film released in 2015 – graced our screens with Mackie, Rogen, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as its stars. This film depicted the wild, R-rated antics of a group of friends on Christmas Eve. Known for being selective about his roles, “The Night Before” stands out in Mackie’s career as an uncommon foray into comedy. The film evidently held significant value for him, as he isn’t typically known to take souvenirs from movie sets.
It’s entirely reasonable for him to desire the Christmas sweater since they were intentionally humorous and tailored to each character in the film. Moreover, it’s an essential holiday wardrobe item that he could wear repeatedly. On the other hand, the Falcon helmet and Captain America shield are fascinating memorabilia, but they’re not practical clothing items that Mackie could consistently wear. If I were an actor, I too would be tempted to take some clothes from such a lively movie as “The Night Before“.
Looking at this photo featuring Seth Rogen’s shoutout, it sparks a desire in me to see these actors reunite once more. Mackie possesses an exceptional knack for comedy, as evidenced by his amusing interviews. Despite his busy schedule with numerous upcoming Marvel films, I can’t help but wish he’d take on another comedic role. R-rated comedies are seldom released in theaters these days, but considering Mackie’s growing fame and Rogen’s track record of producing side-splitting movies, perhaps they could team up to create cinematic magic once more. I’m confident Mackie wouldn’t mind another chance to wear that sweater again!
It may be a while before something like this comes into fruition, but in the meantime, you can revisit Anthony Mackie and Seth Rogen in The Night Before, which is currently streaming with a Starz subscription. Fans of Mackie actor can next see him in Captain America: Brave New World, which is set to hit theaters on February 14th, 2025.
