In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a fresh Sentinel of Liberty is now present, portrayed by Anthony Mackie! Lately, this beloved actor has been basking in the appreciation from fans due to the launch of “Captain America: Brave New World“. Not too long ago, Mackie interacted with his followers on social media, answering questions about the MCU and other intriguing topics. Additionally, Mackie gave a glimpse into his feelings as he steps into Chris Evans’ footsteps and provided some explanation for his frequent use of YOLO (You Only Live Once).
What Did Anthony Mackie Say About Chris Evans?
It goes without saying that the Sam Wilson actor had some serious shoes to fill, as Chris Evans more than embodied the role of OG Captain America Steve Rogers. Despite that, though, I’d say Anthony Mackie more than rose to the occasion in Brave New World. Mackie recently took to Instagram to talk about the making of this latest MCU film, and a user named built2flawless asked what it was like for Mackie to take over for Evans while Sam was taking over for Steve:
Chris excelled as Captain. He breathed life into Steve Rogers in a manner that resonated deeply with us all. On the other hand, Sam Wilson presents a distinct take on Captain America. Yet, I enjoy seeing him portray Steve Rogers just as much.
Steve Rogers, or Captain America as we know him, passed on his role and iconic shield at the end of Avengers: Endgame, handing it over to Sam Wilson in a heartfelt scene. Initially taken aback, Sam eventually took up the mantle during the events depicted in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. This series paved the way for Sam’s first solo adventure within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where he confronts a conspiracy that leads him to encounter the Red Hulk. You can catch this series on Disney+.
It’s heartwarming to listen to Anthony Mackie express such affection for Chris Evans, whom he developed a strong bond with during their work together. This close relationship led Evans to reveal the ending of Endgame, telling Mackie about Sam’s new role. Since then, the actor from Knives Out has been consistently supportive of his fellow cast member. In 2022, Evans confirmed that Sam Wilson will be the new Captain America, a statement made in response to fans who felt that Rogers was indispensable. Indeed, Mackie is right when he says that this portrayal of Captain America is unique and Mackie has made it his own.
Anthony Mackie Shared The Story Behind His YOLO Habit
During his AMA session, the veteran Marvel actor often employs the phrase “YOLO” on set. This term is well-known and stands for “you only live once.” However, the Twisted Metal actor has a particular reason for using it so often.
In a jovial anecdote, while filming the Falcon/Winter Soldier boat scene, one of the camera operators exclaimed, “Falcon’s driving our boat, YOLO!” This became a recurring joke on set. I’ve always been fortunate to work with an excellent, humorous, and personable crew in every Marvel production I’ve been involved in.

Upcoming Marvel Movies: Release Dates For Phase 5 And Phase 6
It seems that Anthony Mackie’s repeated use of “buddy” on talk shows is likely an inside joke from his time working on Marvel productions. Just like many of us share jokes with our close friends and co-workers, it appears Mackie has forged strong bonds with the people he’s worked alongside over the years. It’s always fun to learn interesting stories about what goes on behind the scenes in movies!
In a new turn of events, “Captain America: Brave New World” won’t be Anthony Mackie’s last hurrah in the Marvel Cinematic Universe or his final appearance wearing the iconic shield. He’s slated to reappear as Sam in the upcoming “Avengers: Doomsday” and its sequel, “Secret Wars.” Despite Chris Evans denying involvement in the first film, there are whispers that he might still be part of it; some aren’t so sure. After the movie is out, I hope Mackie hosts another engaging AMA session, sharing intriguing insights for fans.
