Anurag Kashyap's film heroines wear cotton sarees worth Rs 250, says Bollywood makeup artist as he reacts to entourage cost debate

As a dedicated follower of the Indian film industry, I have witnessed firsthand the ongoing debate surrounding the extravagant entourages of Bollywood stars and their associated costs, which has recently been brought to light by several filmmakers, including Anurag Kashyap. Anurag’s comments about the unnecessary expenses for makeup artists and hairstylists have sparked a reaction from one such professional in the industry, Shaan Mutthathil.

Recently, there has been much debate among filmmakers, with Anurag Kashyap being among them, over the substantial expenses associated with Bollywood stars’ entourages. They argue that these costs are unwarranted.

As an obsessed fan of Bollywood’s renowned makeup artist Shaan Mutthathil, I can’t help but share my excitement when he recently reacted to Anurag Kashyap’s intriguing statement. Shaan, who has worked wonders for stars like Jacqueline Fernandez and Rani Mukerji among others, expressed his views with a hint of amusement. He graciously acknowledged Anurag Kashyap’s unique approach to cinema but asserted that the director would still benefit from having a skilled makeup artist on board. Shaan explained that even though the heroines in Anurag Kashyap’s films often wear simple cotton sarees worth just Rs 250 and require minimal makeup, there are moments when subtle enhancements could bring their characters to life more vividly. By sharing this perspective, Shaan showcased his deep understanding of the art of makeup and its role in storytelling through cinema.

Shaan Muttathil on the importance of a celebrity makeup and hairstylist

In a recent podcast interview on Phitte Muh With Sik & Jas’ YouTube channel, Shaan Muttathil discussed the expensive fees of celebrity makeup artists and hairstylists, including himself. He explained that people enter the industry to earn money, and after acquiring significant experience, they charge for their hard-won skills. Shaan posed a question: would Anurag Kashyap request payment equivalent to a new director following his success with numerous “hit films”?

It was expressed that jealousy is common among makeup artists and hairstylists due to their higher pay compared to managers, first ADs, and DOP assistants. Yet, he clarified that only a small number of these artists earn large sums among the vast pool of artists in Mumbai.

Regarding Anurag Kashyap’s comments, he expressed that he could indeed get frustrated given the large budget allotted for makeup and hair at Rs 1.5 lakh, while his heroines don’t require such extensive treatments since his films follow a unique style. He explained further, “My film is set in a rural village where a woman wears a cotton saree priced at Rs 250. She wakes up and cries.” In contrast to other films, there are no girls in his work who have their hair blown in slow motion or whose boyfriends make comments about their lips as they are featured in close-ups.

Giving an example of Karan Johar, he said that when he talked about the matter he never said anything about the makeup and hair artists but said heroes and heroines need to cut down on their fees. “He knows the importance of makeup and hair,” said Shaan.
