Apparently David Corenswet’s Superman Test Totally Destroyed An Iconic Piece Of Henry Cavill’s Superman History

As a longtime Superman fan who has witnessed the evolution of this iconic character across various mediums, I must admit that the news about the damaged Superman costume is a bit disheartening. The suit, once worn by Henry Cavill and now torn apart by David Corenswet during screen tests, represents a piece of history for many fans like myself.

Superman is well-known and important in both comic book stories and movies. Next year, when James Gunn’s movie featuring Superman comes out, it will be the fourth time an actor has played Superman wearing his red cape. However, the actor playing Superman in the upcoming DC film, David Corenswet, didn’t reach this point without causing some trouble for previous versions of Superman. It seems that a Superman costume belonging to Henry Cavill was destroyed during screen tests.

On a recent episode of the Hellish podcast, actor Tom Brittney, who was a finalist for the Superman role, discussed his audition process for the upcoming Superman part in James Gunn’s new DCU franchise. Since there wasn’t a fresh Superman suit available for him to wear, he donned one that Henry Cavill had previously used and shared that he slightly damaged it while putting it on. Later, on Threads, Gunn verified this story and disclosed that by the time David Corenswet, the eventual chosen Superman, attempted to wear the suit, it was in tatters. Gunn further added…

Absolutely! You know, I messed up that mission, and then this towering figure, Corenswet, stepped in. Unfortunately, his size made it a bit too challenging, tearing the whole thing to pieces. By the way, Tom is an absolute favorite of mine among actors. Extremely gifted individual.

It’s quite appropriate that David Cornswet and others chose to wear a Henry Cavill’s Superman costume during their audition. Interestingly, Cavill had used a suit previously worn by Christopher Reeve for his own audition when he was cast as Superman in “Man of Steel”. So, it seems likely that the next time we see Superman on the big screen, they might opt to use David Cornswet’s costume in this new franchise.

Custom-made superhero costumes naturally experience wear and tear from constant putting on and taking off, a process that takes around 30 minutes as mentioned by Tom Brittney. The damage on Corenswet’s costume seems to be due to his exceptional height, which may not have been accounted for in the initial design. Given this unexpected size, it’s understandable that the costume might not hold up as well as expected.

In response to further queries, James Gunn clarified that the Superman costume seen in the film was just “one” of the costumes worn by Cavill, not the sole, unique costume. Over time, multiple versions have been created, and it’s likely there are others in good condition. Moreover, Gunn mentioned that the particular costume used wasn’t in pristine condition to start with, which might explain its selection for the film.

Despite the hiccups in the previous DC movie universe, it’s no surprise that many fans are disappointed, especially since Henry Cavill’s Superman was widely loved. It’s unfortunate to see one of his iconic costumes being destroyed, a sentiment echoed by many.
