Apple TV+ Renews Dark Matter for Season 2

As a long-time fan of science fiction, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the renewal of “Dark Matter” for Season 2! Having grown up devouring books like “A Wrinkle in Time” and “The Chronicles of Riddick,” I’ve always had a soft spot for stories that delve into the complexities of alternate realities and parallel universes.

As a devoted cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that “Dark Matter,” the gripping science fiction thriller on Apple TV featuring the talented Joel Edgerton, has been given a green light for Season 2! Originally billed as a miniseries, it’s now clear that this captivating tale based on Blake Crouch’s novel won’t be confined to just one season. The author himself, who also serves as the showrunner, has made sure Apple TV+ delivers another compelling chapter in May 2024. With its initial release, “Dark Matter” swiftly captured the hearts of viewers, and it was only a matter of time before Apple TV+ and Sony Pictures Television recognized the series’ potential for continued success.

Crouch expressed heartfelt appreciation and revealed an unforeseen revival, showering praise on the dedicated fans who love the series’ unique genre.

“A big thank you to all who joined us for season one, be it book enthusiasts or newcomers; our collaborators at Apple and Sony; my exceptional producing partner Matt Tolmach; an extraordinary cast and crew; and the gracious city of Chicago – you’ve been nothing but kind to us. As we delved into writing and filming season one, we uncovered a wealth of stories yet untold, and we’ve barely scratched the surface of these characters as they navigate their struggles for survival and search for home amidst surreal landscapes. Until next time, see you in the Box!”

Through “Box,” Crouch refers to the distinctive artifact that functioned as a revolutionary gateway in Season 1 of Dark Matter, allowing characters to traverse various realities. Tolmach expressed his admiration for the sci-fi series and its universal appeal to viewers.

“Bringing ‘Dark Matter’ to fruition was a cherished aspiration, and I am immensely proud to witness Blake’s vision unfold and touch the hearts of countless viewers. The Dessens’ adventure has been deeply fulfilling to see it resonate with audiences, and we eagerly anticipate sharing more of this universe – and others – in season two. Heartfelt appreciation goes out to Apple TV+, Sony, and our exceptional cast and crew. Onward we move!”

In this rendition, the film titled “Dark Matter” features Joel Edgerton along with Jennifer Connelly, Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi, Amanda Brugel, and Oakes Fegley. Tobe Crouch oversaw a group of writers and directors meticulously adhering to the narrative structure of the author’s top-selling science fiction novel, widely regarded as one of the genre’s finest modern works. The initial season garnered favorable reviews from both critics and viewers, boasting an impressive 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes for both the Tomatometer and Audience Score.

One of the best sci-fi shows of 2024, Dark Matter tells the story of a physicist named Jason Dessen (Edgerton) who gets abducted and beaten up by a stranger. As it turns out, Jason has been taken by another version of himself, and that alternate version sends Jason to another reality, while the alternate replaces Jason in this one. Now, the good Jason will have to find a way to enter the Box again and navigate through several multiverses in order to return to his family before the bad Jason convinces everyone he’s not an impostor.

The show is a great execution of the genre in Apple TV’s catalog, which also includes sci-fi gems like Severance, Silo, Invasion, and Foundation. Per Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+: “The thought-provoking and gripping Dark Matter has quickly become a global hit, capturing audiences’ imaginations and making it a beloved and integral part of Apple’s world-class sci-fi line up. We are thrilled to continue our collaboration with Blake Crouch, our partners at Sony and the rest of the creative team and cast on a new season that will captivate viewers with more twists and turns as we dive deeper into the mysteries of the multiverse.”
