Apple TV+’s ‘Bad Sisters’ Season 2 Ending, Explained

As a seasoned viewer of crime dramas and mysteries, I must say that the twists and turns in Bad Sisters kept me on the edge of my seat! The show masterfully weaves together a complex web of secrets, deception, and sisterly bonds that left me guessing until the very end.

In the television series Bad Sisters, the Garvey sisters find themselves in a dire predicament that worsens as the story unfolds from Season 1 to Season 2. This Apple TV+ original Irish black comedy quickly gained popularity upon its release in August 2022 and even garnered four Emmy nominations, one of which was for Outstanding Lead Actress, awarded to Sharon Horgan, who not only starred in the show but also developed it as well.

In the first season of the show “Bad Sisters,” the five siblings face conflict with John Paul, the husband of their middle sister Grace, who mistreats her and disrupts all their lives. Their initial plan to eliminate him didn’t work as planned, but unfortunately, John Paul did meet his demise. However, when an insurance agent in a tight spot began searching for signs of wrongdoing to avoid a large payout, the sisters found themselves under suspicion. The plot took a significant twist in season 2 when the siblings realized that they couldn’t simply abandon their past and move forward.

The Aftermath of Grace’s Death

The most surprising event unfolded swiftly in the second episode. Grace, under immense stress, found herself in a tight spot. Her husband Ian (Owen McDonnell) departed upon learning about her actions. Roger (Michael Smiley) was contemplating confessing, which would also implicate Grace. Consequently, she chose to flee. She attempted to contact Eva for aid, but her sister didn’t answer. In a moment of distraction, while searching for a lost earring in the backseat, she veered to avoid an approaching car and met with an accident. Regrettably, Grace perished.

Following Grace’s passing, her sisters and daughter Blanaid (Saise Quinn) are left heartbroken. To make matters worse, Ian unexpectedly attends the funeral, causing further distress. Despite this, Angelica (Fiona Shaw) remains a constant source of meddling. Meanwhile, the women must contend with the determined young detective Una (Thaddea Graham), who is resolute in her belief that there was wrongdoing surrounding John Paul’s death. She picks up on subtle hints to suggest that things are not what they seem and follows connections at every opportunity.

As the sisters uncover clues about Grace’s past activities before her accident, such as a bank withdrawal slip for a significant amount of money, they find themselves questioning what she was involved in. Simultaneously, they are getting to know Ian better, who shares that he has full knowledge of the situation. Notably, his bond with Eva (Horgan) is intensifying, and their connection seems palpable.

As a movie buff, I couldn’t help but feel my heart flutter as Eva, smitten beyond words, didn’t bat an eye at Ian’s sudden urgency to secure their finances together. This was our moment, our chance to ensure Blanaid’s wellbeing and safety. But little did we know, it was then that secrets would be unveiled.

The Truth About Ian

It was no secret, particularly to Angelica, that Grace had questionable taste in men, given Ian’s less-than-admirable character. In a surprising turn of events, Eva received an alert from her bank stating her account had been drained. Upon investigating, she found the house empty and no sign of Ian, suggesting he had fled the scene. Becka’s boyfriend Joe put it succinctly when he said, “The Garveys sure know how to choose a scoundrel.

Although Joe was annoyed with Becka, he shared information that could aid the ladies in locating Ian: he’s a habitual gambler. The sisters headed to Roger, who also enjoyed gambling, seeking his help. He recalled seeing Ian at the racetrack earlier and suggested they might find him there. Armed with this clue, the ladies ventured to the racecourse in search of a hidden gem. They didn’t locate Ian, but discovered that his true name was Cormac and he resided in Tyrone. Ignoring their advice, Eva decided to travel there independently and found his residence, complete with family members. He was indeed present, but declined to answer the door, and the woman feigned ignorance of him.

It eventually comes to light that Ian/Cormac served as a police officer until 2019. He was in charge of investigating the death of a homeless man named Ian Reilly, and after wrapping up the case and leaving the force, he assumed the deceased man’s identity. There were numerous accusations made against Cormac, covering allegations such as fraud and domestic abuse.

As I stood before Grace’s door with Blanaid by my side, I knew I had her cornered. You see, I’d learned of JP’s secrets, and used that knowledge against Grace, threatening her if she didn’t cooperate. Now, with Grace gone, I saw an opportunity to settle the score – and I wasn’t about to let it slip away. So, I put the sisters in a tight spot, using their complicity in covering up Grace’s actions as leverage. It was a dangerous game, but one I was more than willing to play.

What Happened to Grace

In the concluding episode titled “Cliff Hanger”, we uncover Grace’s thoughts and intentions on that critical day, as well as her mental state. Upon confessing the truth to Ian and attempting to prevent him from leaving by pushing him, his attitude shifts dramatically, causing him to shove her instead, leaving her stunned. Later, they have a phone conversation, during which he declares he’s finished, but suggests that if she wants him to conceal her secret, she must make it worth his while.

When Grace discovers Ian’s phone in her kitchen and calls a number they often communicate with, she listens to another woman’s voice instead. Grace announces that it’s her husband’s phone and overhears Ian during the call. He seems distant and strategic when he takes control of the conversation, instructing her to retrieve his money and never reach out to him through that number again.

Grace secretly stashes the cash she withdrew from the bank in her garden, hidden beneath some turtles. Later on, Garda Inspector Fergal Loftus (Barry Ward) discovers it there. She heads off to a pub to confront Ian and seek answers, but he acts unconcerned towards her while she remains perplexed.

In response to his persistent demands for everything from her and his threats to expose their secret not only to the police but also to Blanaid, Grace refuses to yield and leaves instead. Tragically, this is the moment when she meets with an accident and loses her life.

How It All Ends

Currently, Eva and her sisters challenge Ian, yet he remains obstinate. He lashes out at Grace, labeling her a “murderous lunatic.” Suddenly, a hard object strikes his head. Angelica has just arrived, heard his offensive words, and refuses to tolerate it.

Despite appearances suggesting otherwise, the disoriented Ian apparently did not meet his demise by falling off the cliff. Instead, the women decided to act morally and contact the authorities about the man they had seen fall from the cliff edge, needing assistance. They are not murderers, mind you. Later, when they returned home, Angelica was found with Detective Una (played by Thaddea Graham), who had been informed of the incident. However, since Ian is miraculously still alive and Detective Una has already uncovered Ian’s true identity and his numerous misdemeanors, she intends to offer aid – although she grapples with making this decision due to Ian’s past actions.

In a hospital visit, Una stands by the Garveys and introduces Loftus, who is now retired and has no more obligations. He informs Ian bluntly that he will refute everything Ian says, and if necessary, manipulate evidence to make sure his account isn’t credible. They pressure him to return the money to the Garvey sisters, promising to keep silent about any other misdeeds and his fabricated identity, should he comply. With this understanding, Una and Loftus form an alliance, and in the end, Loftus praises her, encouraging her to remain with the police force because they value detectives like her.

In a quick glimpse of the future, the sisters embark on a walk towards the water, where Becka joins Joe and their newly born child. It’s time for them to scatter Grace’s remains, marking a heartfelt farewell. For the first time, Blanaid confesses to Eva about her father not being a virtuous man. Yet, she acknowledges that she is good, much like their mother was.
