Apple’s Matt Cherniss on Record Emmy Haul and ‘Studio’ Breakthrough: “Their Gut Was Right”

On Tuesday, both Ron Howard and Martin Scorsese were nominated for their first Emmy awards in the acting category, as they portrayed themselves in “The Studio”. This fun fact that Apple TV+’s head of programming, Matt Cherniss, could boast about is being deliberately overlooked by him.

Cherniss humbly stated to The Hollywood Reporter while laughing, ‘I won’t claim credit for this; it’s a team decision.’ However, he added, ‘It’s simply fantastic that we got these nominations! As fans ourselves, it’s a joy to see esteemed colleagues and legends in the industry recognized.'”

This version maintains the original meaning but rephrases some of the sentences for easier reading. The emphasis on the team decision and the joy of seeing colleagues recognized has been highlighted.

As a passionate gamer, I’m absolutely thrilled to share that my favorite comedy series, “The Studio,” has made a splash at the awards this year! It racked up an impressive 23 nominations, setting a new record for a first-year comedy and tying the overall comedy record held by “The Bear” from last year.

However, in most years, a show with 23 nominations would be the clear winner – but not this time! This year, season two of Apple TV+’s “Severance” stole the show with an astounding 27 nominations, making it the frontrunner across all platforms. It’s like watching my favorite characters level up to a whole new dimension!

Apple’s two main shows significantly contributed to the impressive 81 Emmy nominations (an increase from 72 last year), with a dozen other series on the platform also receiving recognition. As Cherniss stated, “Having 14 shows honored truly speaks volumes about everyone involved in those series.” It was delightful to see Brian Tyree Henry nominated for Dope Thief. I find Presumed Innocent to be an outstanding show and incredibly rewarding. Shrinking is both funny and heartfelt, and it’s wonderful to see nominations for Harrison Ford, Jason Segel, and the entire team behind that series. Once more, we appreciate all the hard work that these creators and talents put into these shows.

The Studio’s nominations encompass various categories such as the best comedy series, five nominations for guest actor in a comedy series (Howard, Scorsese, Bryan Cranston, Dave Franco, and Anthony Mackie), and a triple threat achievement for co-creator, director, and star Seth Rogen in acting, writing, and directing. Cherniss mentioned that the unique vision shared by Rogen and co-creator Evan Goldberg, who directed every episode alongside him, played a significant role in amassing this abundance of nominations.

They had a strong intuition regarding a unique show they wished to create, an inner sense of how to present tales in an unusual yet familiar manner, perhaps unlike what we’re accustomed to. I believe the series is incredibly humorous, relevant, and celebratory of our industry, all while narrating compelling stories and introducing captivating characters. I think their instincts were spot-on, and their gut feeling was correct about crafting a narrative about this town and Hollywood in such an innovative way.
