As a seasoned gamer and tech enthusiast who’s been around since the days of the original Mac mini, I must say, Apple has outdone itself with this latest offering! The new Mac mini is like a dream come true for us compact-loving gamers. It packs a punch in terms of performance, making it an ideal machine for those who want power and portability without compromising on style.
Apple unveiled its tiniest-ever desktop computer, a device that can comfortably fit within the span of your hand.
The new Mac mini measures just five-by-five-inches which, Apple says, is “less than half the size of the previous design.” It’s powered by the brand’s latest silicon in two options, M4 and M4 Pro, a generational jump from the M2 and M2 Pro chips found in the most recent Mac mini models before these. According to Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, John Ternus, the new Mac mini “delivers gigantic performance in an unbelievably small design,” with an announcement from the brand including a comparison between the new M4 and M1 model from 2020 – the first Mac mini with Apple Silicon – claiming the new Mac mini has “1.8x faster CPU performance and 2.2x faster GPU performance over the M1 model.”
As a devoted enthusiast, I’m thrilled about the new Mac mini models, particularly the upgrade in RAM. Unlike the previous generations that only offered 8GB, these new ones come with a standard 16GB RAM, double the amount! This is a trend we’ve noticed from Apple lately, such as on the latest iPad mini. It seems Apple is aiming to optimize the devices for seamless performance of Apple Intelligence.
For the first time, Apple has incorporated hardware-accelerated ray tracing into the Mac mini, making it an ideal choice for gaming. This upgrade also extends its appeal to music producers with high-impedance headphones, as evidenced by the addition of a front-mounted headphone jack on the device. The Mac mini now boasts a total of five USB-C ports, three at the back and two on the front; however, it’s worth noting that Apple has phased out USB-A entirely from the Mac mini, so if you’re still using devices from the 2010s, keep a USB-C dongle handy. Additional features include Gigabit Ethernet and HDMI connectivity, with the M4 Mac mini capable of supporting two 6K and one 5K displays, while the M4 Pro can handle three 6K displays.
As an enthusiast, I’m thrilled about the new Mac mini! It boasts a versatile collection of ports to cater to any setup. Up front, you’ll find two USB-C ports that accommodate USB 3, and an audio jack for crisp sound output. The back hosts three Thunderbolt 4 ports with the M4 model, while the M4 Pro version offers three Thunderbolt 5 ports. Standard equipment includes Gigabit Ethernet, upgradeable to 10Gb Ethernet for swifter network performance, and an HDMI port for seamless connection to a TV or HDMI display without the need for an adapter. The M4 Mac mini can handle up to two 6K displays and one 5K display, while the M4 Pro version can manage as many as three 6K displays at 60Hz, delivering over 60 million pixels in total!
You can pre-order the new Mac mini now through Apple with prices starting at $599 USD.
