As a seasoned movie critic who’s witnessed the rise and fall of countless celluloid heroes, I must say that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s career trajectory is nothing short of captivating. His portrayal of Black Manta was electrifying, and now he’s diving headfirst into the intense world of ‘Man on Fire’.
Actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, famed for his portrayal of Black Manta in the film “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” is at present engaged in filming a Netflix action series. However, there was a minor incident on set that resulted in an injury for the actor.
As reported by Deadline, an injury sustained by Mateen during filming necessitated a brief halt in production so that he could fully recover from his hand wound. Thankfully, this isn’t a serious setback, as filming is scheduled to resume on Monday next week. At present, the Netflix action thriller is being filmed in Mexico City, with cast and crew expected back soon. However, Mateen might require an additional few days before he can return to set, as he needs to complete all his scenes before December 20, which marks the final day of shooting, as per Deadline.
The film titled “Man on Fire” is a fresh take on the book with the same name. Mateen plays multiple roles, directing, acting, and producing, in this series that revolves around a protective agent who embarks on a rampage of violence after a child he’s guarding is abducted. As yet, it remains undecided whether the storyline will draw from the 1980 novel or Tony Scott’s 2004 movie adaptation.
As a movie aficionado, I’m thrilled to share that the upcoming miniseries is set to adapt the first two books from A. J. Quinnell’s gripping series, “Man on Fire” and “The Perfect Kill”. In line with Netflix’s popular format, this riveting tale will unfold across eight captivating episodes.
‘Man on Fire’ Features the Return of One of Denzel Washington’s Most Important Characters
Mateen is set to portray the character of John Creasy in the TV series based on Quinnell’s books. In the initial movie adaptation titled “Man on Fire,” Denzel Washington starred as a former CIA operative dealing with addiction issues. After an unsuccessful suicide attempt, Creasy discovers peace and support while accepting a job to protect a young child.
When Pita is abducted, Creasy swiftly becomes the prime suspect. Fortunately, his confidants manage to conceal him, prompting Creasy to take action independently. He embarks on a mission to track down the kidnappers, ultimately unleashing the fury of a man grieving deeply over Pita’s absence, who found solace in caring for her.
In its initial release, Denzel Washington delivered an exceptional and demanding performance in “Man on Fire”. The movie generated more than $130 million at the box office from a production budget of $70 million. Although it didn’t receive much praise from critics initially (with a 38% freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes), its popularity has grown over time, earning it cult status. Some criticized the film for its excessive violence, but it effectively portrayed Creasy’s tormented soul using fire to fight fire.
Nevertheless, it never would have worked without Washington’s grounded performance as Creasy, a morally complicated man whose decision to fully avenge Pita’s kidnapping is not about right or wrong, but about a final objective. We’re pretty sure Mateen will be inspired by Hollywood’s legend and try to do something equally compelling with the character.
