AR Rahman and Saira Banu’s lawyer admits their marriage had ‘ups and downs’; breaks silence on links with bassist Mohini Dey

As a dedicated follower of the world of music, I find myself deeply saddened by the news of the separation of AR Rahman and his wife Saira Banu after 29 years of marriage. As someone who has grown up listening to the melodious tunes composed by AR Rahman, it is disheartening to see such a personal matter unfold in the public eye.

29-year married couple AR Rahman and Saira Banu stunned everyone with their sudden separation news on Tuesday evening. Not long after, Mohini Dey, one of Rahman’s bassists, also revealed her split. This sparked speculation among netizens about potential connections between the two announcements. However, legal representatives for Rahman and Banu have denied any link between the splits.

In a recent conversation with Republic TV, divorce and family lawyer, Vandana Shah talked about her client AR Rahman and his wife Saira Banu’s decision to get divorced. Upon being asked if their decision of separation was linked to Mohini Dey also ending her marriage, Shah clarified that there is no connection between them.

She stated, “There’s absolutely no connection between them. Saira and Mr. Rahman made their decision independently.” Furthermore, she disclosed that Banu’s final agreement hasn’t been determined yet, but emphasized that the separation was a friendly one.

The lawyer acknowledged that the statement describing their decision as coming from “pain and agony” was indeed accurate, as it was a “grievous choice” for both parties involved. She further explained, “Ending a marriage is never a cause for joy. It’s a solemn and painful decision. Saira has faced her share of highs and lows in this relationship.

Throughout the discussion, Shah chose not to disclose the cause of Rahman and Banu’s divorce, stating she couldn’t reveal it. However, she did share that while Rahman was a caring husband, Banu was a devoted wife, and both are dedicated to improving their lives separately or together.

In regards to their recent attendance at Radhika Merchant and Anant Ambani’s wedding, there were questions about whether A.R. Rahman and Saira Banu appeared together merely as public figures. However, she emphasized that both of them were sincere individuals and their union was not a sham for publicity purposes. Moreover, she opted against addressing the various reactions on social media regarding the use of “#arsairabreakup” in his divorce announcement by the Oscar-winning composer.

In 1995, AR Rahman tied the knot with Saira Banu, and they share three kids together. Just hours following their split announcement, the acclaimed musician shared a heartfelt message on his social media platform at midnight, confirming their decision.
