Workers at the arcade section of the Casa Bonita immersive eatery, which is run by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, were granted voluntary union recognition following a two-month campaign to achieve this status.
As a dedicated gamer at Casa Bonita in Denver, we, the team of eight, united our voices and signed union authorization cards back in May. Our aim was to establish a stronger bond with IATSE Local 7, seeking better job stability, fair compensation, and regular scheduling. Fortunately, our management agreed to acknowledge our union status voluntarily after a third-party card check, which took place in July.
Following the initiation of a unionization process by a team of around 80 individuals, comprising approximately 60 performers and roughly 20 crew members, last autumn, due to health and safety worries, fair compensation, and other matters.
Located in Lakewood, Colorado (near Denver), the Casa Bonita restaurant originally opened its doors in 1974 before being revamped and reopened again in 2024 under new ownership by Parker and Stone – famously known for an episode of South Park set within this very establishment. The unique dining experience includes cliff divers, performers, puppeteers, magicians, and many other forms of entertainment.
Initially, some employees advocated for unionization but were not granted voluntary recognition. Consequently, they applied for an election with the National Labor Relations Board. In this election, both parties overwhelmingly voted in favor of unionizing with Actors’ Equity and IATSE. Despite these victories, Colorado law mandates that another election, known as an all-union agreement election, must be held to endorse the union contracts. The crew members conducted their election in December 2024 and emerged victorious again. Now, the Actors’ Equity members are getting ready for that election.
By joining the current IATSE negotiating team, the arcade workers avoided having to undergo a separate voting procedure.

The creators behind “South Park” have found themselves in headlines too, due to their threats of taking legal steps and leveling accusations against Paramount’s president, Jeff Shell, for interfering in the contract discussions between Warner Bros. Discovery and Netflix.
