Are Incoming DLC Plans for Mortal Kombat 1 Not Dead After All?

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve got to admit, DLC (Downloadable Content) has been a fantastic cash cow for fighting games, especially Mortal Kombat. Last November, I found myself in a bit of a pickle when whispers started circulating that their much-anticipated Kombat Pack 3 was allegedly getting canned.

It’s been revealed that the cancellation may not hold water after all. In fact, the series co-creator, Ed Boon, shared some encouraging news on his social media which has sparked optimism among fans about the potential continuation of MK1 DLC.

MK1 DLC Not Dead After All?

As a dedicated Mortal Kombat fan, I’m thrilled to share that in a recent update, Ed Boon himself has confirmed the continuation of plans for additional downloadable content (DLC) for Mortal Kombat 1.

Here’s his post:

To date, one more character has yet to join the game, and that’s the liquid metal terminator known as the T-1000 from Terminator 2: Judgement Day. The latest downloadable content (DLC) added to the game was Conan the Barbarian, marking the second appearance of Arnold Schwarzenegger in the game, following the introduction of the T-800 in Mortal Kombat 11.

Which Characters Can Fans Expect to Come in Future DLC?

Without giving any direct clues about potential characters for future DLC, the pattern seen in past Kombat Packs might provide hints as to what we could anticipate if a Kombat Pack 3 is unveiled.

For context, the characters available for Kombat Pack 1 included:

  • Homelander
  • Peacemaker
  • Ermac
  • Quan Chi
  • Omni-Man
  • Takeda

Kombat Pack 2 featured:

  • Sektor
  • Cyrax
  • Noob Saibot
  • Ghostface
  • Conan the Barbarian
  • T-1000

Fans might enjoy a blend of familiar MK characters along with some guest stars from other series. After being absent from playable characters in MKX, Bo Rai Cho is eagerly anticipated by many fans, and characters from various MK eras are likely to delight their respective fan bases.

The franchise appears to favor maintaining an 80s vibe in its guest appearances, as the original Mortal Kombat was significantly impacted by 80s action. Characters such as Chuck Norris, Jackie Chan, Kurt Russell, and Bruce Willis seem like they could potentially join the game, regardless of who they might represent.

As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but notice that Mortal Kombat has a soft spot for the chilling allure of the horror genre. With iconic figures like Freddy, Jason, the Xenomorph, and Predator already gracing its roster, it makes me wonder who else might be lurking in the shadows, ready to join this terrifying cast.

It’s clear that many fans would be thrilled to see playable characters from the Hellraiser series, as WB holds the rights to IT, and a character like Pennywise the Clown could easily find a place in Mortal Kombat. Additionally, given his quirky nature, Michael Keaton’s Beetlejuice might just be the perfect fit for MK.

Before the debut of the T-1000, fans can only speculate, however, Boon frequently shares character polls on his social media to offer a hint about potential additions to the hero roster.

Mortal Kombat 1 is now available for PC, Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and Nintendo Switch.
