Marvel Rivals has demonstrated convincingly that visually stylish graphics suit superhero games exceptionally well. The upcoming Marvel Cosmic Invasion follows suit by adopting a ’90s vibe to its design, indicating that this trend may persist in the future.
Although it’s clear that detailed visuals can be enticing, it’s reassuring to see that superhero video games tend to shift away from this focus, generally speaking.
The Insomniac’s Spider-Man games appeared to strike an ideal mix by incorporating lifelike graphics into a superhero game. The characters were modeled after real individuals, and their ability to express emotions was truly remarkable. Yet, it achieved this with a lively, colorful aesthetic and offered a bustling city for players to discover.
There were also a lot of comic book costumes to unlock, which helped with the superhero setting.
Initially, when Marvel’s Avengers was unveiled, spectators grew tired of the overly realistic visuals. Despite improvements in these graphics, viewers disliked the emphasis on realism and found the live-service aspect less than appealing. Although there are supporters for this game, it is unfortunate that they didn’t opt for a more distinctive graphical style.
Eidos’ Guardians of the Galaxy retained a realistic graphic aesthetic, similar to Marvel’s Spider-Man, unfortunately, due to previous disappointments with The Avengers game, many fans didn’t consider playing
One notable contributor to advanced visuals in superhero video games is Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite. This action game transitioned to a new engine but aimed to keep the same character designs as Marvel vs Capcom 3, which didn’t produce the desired result. Consequently, it resulted in one of the most unattractive graphic styles ever witnessed in a superhero game. It was Maximilian Dood who managed to improve the game’s visual appearance.
We’re okay with superhero games taking a more realistic approach every now and then. As we mentioned earlier, it suits games like Marvel’s Spider-Man, and the majority of fans appreciate its visual style. However, with Marvel Rivals demonstrating what a stylish superhero game can be, we’re hoping for a temporary shift away from this realistic art style.
The prospect is optimistic, given the rise of visually appealing games such as Marvel Rivals and Cosmic Invasion that feature comic-book-style graphics. It might be beneficial for DC to emulate this trend and consider incorporating a similar aesthetic in their adaptations.
