As a long-time fan of Yellowstone and someone who has spent countless hours dissecting each episode with fellow enthusiasts, I must admit that the latest twist in the series – John Dutton’s untimely demise – left me reeling. The midseason premiere was like a punch to the gut, and it seems Jamie Dutton felt the same way. His shock at his father’s death was palpable, but I can’t help but wonder if he’s just as surprised by his own actions in conspiring with Sarah Atwood.
Major spoilers ahead for Yellowstone Season 5 through Episode 10, which aired November 17.
As we approach the final episodes of Yellowstone in 2024, the shocking death of John Dutton has undeniably been the main storyline of Season 5B. Even though his demise might have seemed inevitable, it happened much sooner than expected. Interestingly, Jamie Dutton, who had plotted with Sarah Atwood to act when the midseason finale aired two years ago, was equally taken aback by this turn of events. One can’t help but wonder about their relationship – is there a genuine connection between them or are they merely acting out of self-interest? Actor Wes Bentley recently shared his insights on this intriguing duo with TopMob.
In the midseason premiere of “Yellowstone,” it appeared that Jamie Dutton was taken aback by his father’s demise. He expressed to Sarah that he hadn’t anticipated her following through on their discussion during his conflict with Beth (Kelly Reilly). TopMob’s Riley Utley had a chat with Wes Bentley about his character’s complications, and it seems that many viewers share your confusion regarding Jamie and Sarah’s relationship. Bentley stated:
In the upcoming season, we’ll delve deeper into Jamie and Sarah’s relationship dynamics and their individual desires. It was often unclear whether they were manipulating each other or genuinely connecting, which added an element of intrigue for me too. As we progress through the storyline, it will be fascinating to see how this unfolds. This is another brilliant concept from Taylor, no doubt.
It appears that there’s a strong physical bond between them, yet it’s unclear whether they are deeply in love or merely united against a mutual adversary, using each other for their respective goals. Wes Bentley himself might not be fully aware of the depth of their feelings.
Earlier, Wes Bentley had commented that he perceived similar manipulative behavior in Sarah (Dawn Olivieri) as he saw in Jamie’s family. Yet, he suggested Jamie might have intentionally fostered this relationship to get Sarah to aid him against Beth and John. After all, Sarah has fulfilled part of their agreement by arranging a team for the murder of her adoptive father, making it seem like a suicide. However, the situation between Jamie and Sarah remains somewhat unclear at this point.
Regardless of Sarah’s full intentions with Jamie, it still feels like Beth is the bigger of the two evils, because it certainly seems like only the thinnest of threads is keeping her from tearing Jamie limb from limb. She didn’t believe the suicide coverup for one nanosecond, and hasn’t it always seemed like Jamie is just one wrong look away from being slaughtered by Beth? Only time will tell — and by that, I mean the next four episodes.
New episodes of Yellowstone air at 8 p.m. ET Sundays on Paramount Network.
