2024 offered a wealth of excellent films, yet, much like any other year, it also had its fair share of flops that failed to resonate with viewers. The action spy comedy Argylle, directed by Matthew Vaughn, seems to fit squarely in the latter group. Despite receiving unfavorable reviews, this film has managed to maintain a consistent spot among the Top 10 on Apple TV+, much to the surprise of critics.
According to Apple, the movie “Argylle” currently holds the number 10 spot on its list of top 10 most popular films, having consistently appeared in various positions since its debut on streaming platforms last April. Starring an impressive ensemble including Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, John Cena, and Samuel L. Jackson, “Argylle” revolves around a secluded author (played by Bryce Dallas Howard) who becomes entangled in the world of spies and espionage when she discovers that her new novel about spies bears an uncanny resemblance to real-life events.
Opening in theaters on February 2, 2025, Argylle raked in an impressive $92.2 million at the box office, despite receiving largely negative reviews from critics. With a rating of only 33% on Rotten Tomatoes, Yasmine Kandil from Discussing Film described it as “somewhat uninspiring and artificial.” MovieWeb’s Julian Roman stated in his review that Argylle‘s uneven nature is trying to one’s patience, although he also pointed out that the ensemble of well-known actors have good chemistry but are eventually overshadowed by the confusing antics.
Fans Were a Little Kinder to ‘Argylle’
While some critics might not have found delight in Vaughn’s campy spy comedy, the audience was more lenient towards the film. The Rotten Tomatoes Popcornmeter shows it has a commendable 71% approval rating, with many viewers deeming it an enjoyable experience despite its shortcomings. One user described Argylle as a “star-studded wink to spy movies,” while another acknowledged that although it runs for 2 hours and 20 minutes, it provides ample time for each scene to unfold gracefully.
It appears that many viewers on Letterboxd, similar to critics, seem to single out the cat and Henry Cavill as the film’s redeeming factors. One user remarked, “If not for the cat and Henry Cavill, this movie wouldn’t even get a half-star rating from me.” Another reviewer expressed frustration saying, “I wish I had rotten tomatoes to throw at this movie.” A third viewer gave the film a mere half-star, indicating significant dissatisfaction.
This experience seems more like a squandered effort for all parties, whether in front or behind the camera. The performers received considerable compensation, yet this movie is truly disappointing.
It’s evident that the film “Argylle” was quite controversial in 2024. However, Apple subscribers are still finding and watching it approximately ten months following its streaming premiere. As we move into 2025, there’s a question if this will lead to more favorable reviews. For now, it continues to be one of those movies that people either adore or dislike intensely. You can stream “Argylle” on Apple TV+ currently, and keep an eye out for Henry Cavill in the upcoming action thriller “In the Grey“, set to debut later this year.
