The final credits have been displayed for the film “Eddington,” the latest production by Ari Aster, which was eagerly awaited at the Cannes Film Festival as one of the festival’s most highly anticipated movies from A24.
After the movie ended and the credits rolled, some viewers in the balcony left, but Aster and his talented cast members warmly greeted each other during a somewhat quiet standing ovation. Emma Stone, Austin Butler, Luke Grimes, and Clifton Collins Jr. all shared hugs. There were many heartfelt applauses for Joaquin Phoenix as he fought back tears in the Lumiere theater.
Aster expressed his surprise and gratitude by saying, “I’m at a loss for words. I’m not sure what you might be thinking. But let me tell you, I feel incredibly honored to be in this place. This is something I’ve always dreamt of.” He followed with a chuckle, “I guess I’m just a bit overwhelmed, if that makes sense?
The movie unfolds in May 2020, in a quaint New Mexico town, where the local sheriff (Phoenix) clashes with the mayor (Pascal). Details about the storyline are being kept secret, but based on the film’s trailer, it seems to depict the tumultuous period of the COVID-19 pandemic, with snippets of news broadcasts and social media updates showing the virus’ progression and the ensuing chaos. Additionally, it hints at the summer’s racial awakening and the protests sparked by incidents of police brutality.
Before the screening commenced, the cast was greeted with warm applause and a friendly reception as they stepped into the theater. Notably, several of them are seasoned veterans of Cannes. Among them, Pascal, Phoenix, and Stone are all making their comeback to the Croisette. Each has previously premiered projects here; for instance, Phoenix showcased his 2017 competition film “You Were Never Really Here,” while Stone’s films with director Yorgos Lanthimos have also been screened.
In the primary competition segment at the festival, Eddington will be competing with movies from filmmakers like Wes Anderson, Lucia Ducournau, and Lynne Ramsay.
