As a movie reviewer with a penchant for uncovering hidden gems and appreciating diverse talent, I must say Ariana DeBose has truly outdone herself with her latest project, “House of Spoils.” The actress’s transformative journey from song-and-dance beginnings to a versatile powerhouse is nothing short of remarkable.
Prior to the premiere of “House of Spoils”, we had a chat with the remarkable Ariana DeBose. This latest Blumhouse film, now available on Prime Video, showcases her as a highly proficient chef in a witchy role. Her character in the story is a heroine who finds herself torn between opening a new restaurant and combating mysterious forces lurking within her secluded eatery. It’s an exhilarating journey, and Ariana shared with MovieWeb her approach to mastering culinary skills for this project.
In her own words, she shared, “As I’m primarily a visual learner, I frequently scour the internet for practical visuals. Fortunately, the internet is abundant in such resources. However, beyond that, I also immersed myself in documentaries, particularly Chef’s Table and Top Chef. I would seek out bits of insights from female chefs’ interviews. Eventually, I stepped into a real kitchen to put my learning into practice.
“I visited Shukette restaurant in Chelsea, New York, where I worked alongside Chef Ayesha. On one occasion, I found myself struggling, feeling numb in both feet and lower back. However, she honed my knife skills significantly and provided me with essential fundamentals before I headed off to Budapest for the movie shoot.”
During my stay in Budapest, DeBose went on to say that he continued his training and mastered many of the recipes featured in the film, though not all. The food stylist for the movie was incredibly helpful and not only made the food an integral part of the story but also worked closely with him. As a result, DeBose now knows how to prepare a delicious sirloin steak.
Ariana DeBose on Tackling Horror & Scarpetta
Ever since my dance-filled beginnings led me to an Oscar win for my performance in West Side Story, I’ve been eager to explore various genres. Recently, I ventured into voice acting with Wish, delved into the world of sci-fi with I.S.S. and Westworld, took on an action-packed role in Argylle, and entered Sony’s Marvel universe with Kraven the Hunter. Now, I’m diving headfirst into horror with House of Spoils. The concept intrigued me because it was so uniquely different and a bit unexpected. I also recognized that this choice might be risky, but I thrive on taking risks.
You understand, this role doesn’t require singing or dancing – it’s simply a part of who I am as an actress. Regardless of its genre, I found the story compelling and personally relatable. So, I believed I could infuse that connection into my performance, which is beneficial. Additionally, I approached each kitchen scene as if they were choreographed sequences, finding that helpful. I thrive on challenges; without them, there’s little purpose.
Looking forward, DeBose is thrilled to join the forthcoming Scarpetta series, which will stream on Prime Video as well. “The cast is simply phenomenal,” expressed DeBose, alluding to Jamie Lee Curtis, Nicole Kidman, Bobby Cannavale, among others. “I just feel incredibly fortunate to have found a place in it,” she added. “I’m genuinely excited about my character, Lucy Farinelli, who possesses her own brand of badassery. Moreover, she occupies a unique position within her world in an intriguing and distinctive manner. Additionally, I haven’t delved into TV roles before, especially not as a regular series character. Therefore, this is another exciting challenge — why not?
