As a dedicated fan who has grown up with the magical tales of Oz, I can’t help but feel a sense of joy and validation seeing the actresses behind Glinda and Elphaba openly discuss their characters’ deep connection in Wicked. The idea that these two iconic characters might have shared something more than just friendship has been a topic of discussion among fans for years, and it’s heartening to see the actors themselves acknowledging this possibility.
Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo discussed the portrayal of Glinda and Elphaba’s sexual orientations, as well as their character relationships, during interviews about the musical production of “Wicked”.
During a conversation with the British magazine Gay Times, the actresses shared their opinions on fans developing romantic feelings towards their on-screen characters.
Erivo stated that Elphie seems to follow wherever the wind takes her. Erivo believes she feels deeply for Glinda. Erivo thinks she cherishes love itself, and there’s nothing wrong with acknowledging the profound connection they share. In truth, they have a relationship, and it is genuine love – possibly why people are speculating about them, knowing that the bond between them is strong and unyielding, like love itself.
Grande echoed her co-star’s sentiment, adding that they have “trust and truth.”
She went on to say, “Such a secure environment for one another is crucial in any relationship, whether romantic or not. Glinda may be keeping something private. Time will tell. It’s simply a profound love, and I believe it surpasses sexual orientation. It’s more about a deep sense of security each has for the other. And that’s likely why fans are drawn to the idea of them together.
Kristin Chenoweth, who played the good witch in the Broadway production of “Wicked”, echoed similar thoughts. She commented on a post by “E! News” about Ariana Grande’s feelings that Glinda might be “a little in the closet”. According to Chenoweth, she had held this opinion long ago as well.
In another part of the interview with Gay Times, the Grammy-winning and Academy Award-nominated artist also mused about the queer nature of the world in Wicked and the realm of Oz, in general.
In the Emerald City, it’s as if every day is a Pride celebration, according to Grande. Even the local chickens, she joked, show signs of being part of the LGBTQ+ community.
Additionally, she pointed out that the character of Dr. Dillamond, played by Peter Dinklage and serving as a history professor of goats at Shiz University, has gained significant recognition as a symbol of the LGBTQ+ community, with his stylish Bode cardigan and unique custom tea apparatus.
In this production, Jonathan Bailey plays Fiyero, Michelle Yeoh takes on the role of Madame Morrible, Jeff Goldblum is portraying the Wizard, Bowen Yang has been cast as Pfannee, Marissa Bode as Nessarose, Keala Settle as Miss Coddle, and Ethan Slater as Boq. These actors, along with others, make up director Jon M. Chu’s diverse acting ensemble.
Wicked part one is in theaters now.
