Armed Rabbi Embraces Second Amendment in ‘Guns & Moses’

The biggest Jewish Western since “The Frisco Kid” arrives at a harrowing time in the culture.

Guns & Moses” tells the story of a weary Rabbi, forced to take up firearms after a hate-fueled White Supremacist assaults his congregation. However, all is not as it seems, as this Rabbi delves into an enigma, while simultaneously learning about the complexities of the Second Amendment along the way.

The movie featuring Mark Feuerstein portraying Rabbi Mo, alongside Neal McDonough known for “The Last Rodeo”, Christopher Lloyd, and Dermot Mulroney will be shown in cinemas across the country on July 18.

The idea for the movie originated from the tragic shooting at the Poway synagogue in 2019, which claimed one life and left three others injured. The production for “Guns & Moses” was completed towards the end of 2022, around a year before the October 7 attacks that resulted in over 1,200 deaths, triggering a surge of antisemitism not just across America but also in various global regions.

The film’s release date is notable given recent headlines.

  • Jewish Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro’s home was set ablaze by a pro-Palestinian activist
  • Two Jewish citizens were killed in cold blood by a pro-Palestinian activist in Washington, D.C.
  • Peaceful protestors were set on fire by a pro-Palestinian activist in Boulder, Colo.

In creating “Guns & Moses,” our goal was to develop Rabbi Mo into an unforgettable character, one who wholeheartedly believes that it’s the seemingly ordinary individuals who rise to the occasion when we need them the most, as Director Salvador Litvak expressed in a press statement announcing the film’s premiere.

Growing up, I was not exposed to guns. Similar to many American Jews, I didn’t see the Second Amendment as crucial. However, upon becoming an Orthodox Jew, I became more visible and realized the potential risks to my community. Consequently, like Rabbi Mo, I took action and assumed a protective role. I hope our film will motivate others to do the same and strengthen our defenses, so we may never have to face such a challenge.

Litvak belongs to a collective named Magen Am, who educate the Jewish community in self-defense for the safety of their religious groups. The movie’s slogan carries significant weight: “May God and Your Firearm Safeguard You.

The movie ‘Guns & Moses’ was screened at some film festivals earlier this year. In an interview with The Times of Israel conducted in March, Litvak elaborated further on the film’s central ideas.

The notion that Jews face threats, are being targeted, and must defend themselves has been a constant concern…Unfortunately, the circumstances in which this film is released only serve to make its themes even more pertinent.

“If we mean it when we say ‘never again,’ we can’t just rely on other people to protect us.”
