As a lifelong Gooner with roots deeply entrenched in both football and Black British culture, I can’t help but feel a sense of profound connection and pride as I reflect on the Black Arsenal book launch event. Growing up, Arsenal was more than just a team to me; it was a beacon of hope, unity, and inspiration that transcended the pitch.
On an unforgettable night, Arsenal Football Club played host to the celebration of a brand-new book release, entitled “Black Arsenal“. The event brought together the Arsenal family and a broader community.
The seminal work authored by Dr Clive Nwonka delves deeply into Arsenal’s ties with Black British identity and culture, a connection strengthened over decades through legendary Black players and the rich, multifaceted tales of its fanbase on the stands.
The occasion served as both a festive gathering and a thoughtful moment, celebrating the release of the book while simultaneously uniting an array of prominent attendees, including esteemed former Arsenal players, cultural pioneers, and notable figures hailing from various realms of football, music, culture, and more.
As a fan, I was thrilled to be in the same room as Baroness Lola Young, an influential anti-racism advocate; Troy Townsend, who tirelessly campaigns against racism; Cllr Anjna Khurana, the esteemed Mayor of Islington; football legends Gus Caesar, Martin Keown, and Perry Groves, all former Arsenal players; Reggie Yates, a renowned DJ; and artists Chipmunk, Fumez the Engineer, and Jelani Blackman. What an unforgettable night it was!
During the event, attendees enjoyed live music by Radio 1’s Jeremiah Asiamah, sampled Caribbean cuisine, and were captivated by artwork created by Jerrard Wayne, a creative agency that took inspiration from the book’s themes. This gathering facilitated intriguing discussions and heartfelt tributes, leading to a panel where Arsenal legends Paul Davis and Anita Asante shared their insights, joined by Arsenal supporter and Ezra Collective musician Femi Koleoso, as well as Dr Clive Nwonka. The discussion centered around how Arsenal has evolved into a potent emblem of multicultural unity, and its relevance in modern society.
Dr. Clive Nwonka, editor of the publication Black Arsenal, stated: “The connection between Arsenal and Black culture isn’t simple to encapsulate in a few words. This book delves into what Arsenal symbolizes for Black British citizens and its ongoing impact on fostering a wider sense of identity. Arsenal’s attachment to the Black community extends beyond football, permeating various aspects such as media, music, fashion, politics, and everyday social interactions. Tonight was an exceptional tribute to this bond.”
