  • Tyrrell Winston’s A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing explores a “Future Nostalgia” concept
  • The exhibition features ten layered text-based works, blending Americana motifs and cultural critique
  • Hosted by Stems Gallery, it runs until June 22, 2025

Tyrrell Winston recently showcased his newest collection titled “A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing” at Stems Gallery. This exhibition delves into a concept he coined as “Future Nostalgia” – a glimpse into an unrealized future, perceived through the perspective of past and present moments.

Drawing inspiration from Detroit’s industrial heritage, automobile history, and its iconic music scene, Winston’s artwork mirrors the city’s tangible and intangible influence. His artistic style aligns with Mark Fisher’s concept of hauntology, which suggests that creative evolution often revisits the past. This perspective underscores the idea that alternative views of the future might remain illusive. In this context, Winston’s artworks function as a critique, raising questions about the recurrence of historical narratives and whether genuine artistic novelty can ever truly emerge.

The exhibition showcases ten fresh creations, all made from materials sourced in Detroit, symbolizing Winston’s profound bond with his surroundings. These artworks retell the ordinary and the bizarre, uncovering uncharted similarities within American culture. This latest collection of work is inspired by artist Christopher Wool’s paintings, specifically his screen-printed aluminum enamel pieces like “If You (1992-2005). The way Wool employs stenciled truths and critiques of capitalism offers a stark reflection of society’s absurdities – a theme that is evidently reflected in Winston’s art within this collection.

These artworks carry a similar emotional resonance as Jenny Holzer’s bold lettering and messaging, but in vibrant primary colors such as red, green, yellow, and contrastingly black. Pieces such as “Shotgun (Black and Green)”, “Home Run (Navy and Red)” and “Drop Kick (Green and Yellow)” draw connections to well-known sports phrases, with the layered words forming an intricate network of interpretation.

The work “A Sheep in Wolf’s Clothing” by Tyrrell Winston is being displayed at the Stems Gallery right now and will continue to be shown there until June 22, 2025.
