As An Avatar: The Last Airbender Fan, Here Are 6 Things I Recommend Checking Out After You've Watched The Animated And Live-Action Shows

As a die-hard fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender, I can confidently say that my life has been a whirlwind of bending, battles, and breathtaking adventures ever since I first tuned into Nickelodeon all those years ago. And let me tell you, the video game landscape for this beloved series is as vast and varied as the Four Nations themselves!

Oh boy, have I got a story for you! Let me tell ya, there ain’t been a show quite like Avatar: The Last Airbender since I was just a kid growing up in the small town where we didn’t even have cable TV. You see, when that show first came out, it felt like a gift from the heavens for us rural folk who were starved for quality entertainment.

Well, here’s the deal as a fellow gaming enthusiast: You might have dived right into the thrilling live-action adaptation (with Netflix confirming another season) and found yourself utterly captivated by it. So much so, that you felt compelled to explore the animated series too, discovering its own unique charm.

Regardless of what’s on your mind right now, which might be something like “Alright, so where do I explore next?”, rest assured that I have a plan for you! Being well-versed in the realm of Avatar (even the exciting rides at Nickelodeon Universe!), I’m eager to share my discoveries with you. Let’s embark on this journey together, starting with the more popular destinations and gradually delving into less charted territories. So buckle up, fellow Avatar enthusiast! It’s going to be a thrilling adventure!

The Legend Of Korra

Without a doubt, your next stop should be “The Legend of Korra”, especially if you haven’t seen it yet. This series serves as a continuation of the storyline from “Avatar: The Last Airbender” and is often hailed as one of the finest animated shows ever made, much like its predecessor. Some might even argue that it surpasses “The Last Airbender”, but such opinions are rare and controversial.

As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in both “Avatar: The Last Airbender” (ATLA) and “The Legend of Korra” (TLOK), I must say that each series offers a unique perspective on the Avatar’s journey, but it’s the growth and development of the characters, particularly the Avatars themselves, that sets them apart.

“Aang initially resists his power, but eventually learns to accept it, whereas Korra starts off as if she was born an Avatar, yet discovers the importance of being humble.”

For me, the contrasting storyline of TLOK makes it stand out compared to ATLA, and I believe it’s best appreciated if approached that way. Failing to do so could lead to feelings of letdown, as TLOK is not as light-hearted and whimsical as its predecessor.

Actually, it offers a more seasoned perspective on the topic, which is one of the things I find appealing about it. If you approach it with an open mind, chances are, you’ll appreciate it as well.

The Comics

Moving forward, let’s discuss the vast world of comics. With so many new ones emerging, it can be challenging to stay current. Initially, we encountered extended comic series like “The Search”, “The Rift”, “The Promise”, “Imbalance”, “North and South”, and “Smoke and Shadow”.

These narratives unfolded across three instalments, occurring after the conclusion of the Airbender saga. They encompassed tales such as “Avatar: The Lost Adventures” and “Team Avatar Tales”, which are set within the chronology of the animated series, serving as bridges between key events.

Currently, it appears we’re receiving standalone tales instead. For instance, there’s “Katara and the Pirate’s Silver“, “Toph Beifong’s Metalbending Academy“, “Azula in the Spirit Temple“, the captivating “Suki, Alone“, along with the upcoming book, “The Bounty Hunter and the Tea Brewer“, which features June (remember them from the live-action show?) and Iroh.

Apart from tales about Avatar: The Last Airbender, if you’re fond of Korra too, there are comics available for that series as well! If you yearn for more adventures set in this universe, then I recommend delving into the comic books. It seems like a natural progression to explore further in this world through these stories.

The Novels

As a fellow enthusiast, let me tell you that if you’ve grown fond of the comics and yearn to delve further into the intricate tapestry of their lore, I highly recommend checking out the “Chronicles of the Avatar” novels. Currently, there are five books in this series. The first four books focus on the lives of two significant Avatars – Kyoshi and Yangchen. However, if you’re particularly interested in the story of Avatar Roku, the latest addition to the series, titled “The Reckoning of Roku“, is just for you! Enjoy the journey through these captivating tales!

The books represent an exciting development as they delve deeper into the characters from the series, who have primarily been seen in flashbacks or the spirit realm. Moreover, these novels enrich the universe by revealing aspects that were merely suggested in the show.

I’m equally captivated by the fact that the novels have reached a level of maturity unparalleled within the series. Frequently, characters meet their end, and there’s an undeniable seriousness to the narratives that is rarely found in the comics, live-action adaptations, or animated versions.

If you’ve finished reading the comics and are seeking out more mature, leisurely tales for adults, I recommend checking out the Chronicles of the Avatar series without delay.

The Video Games

Have you ever dreamt about possessing the abilities of a bender in the real world – controlling air, fire, water, or earth? Well, I share your sentiment, but alas, it seems like such a scenario remains merely a fantasy. However, who knows what the future holds?

As a devoted gamer, I must confess that the current void in my gaming life isn’t filled by any new releases. However, if you’re looking for something from the world of “The Last Airbender”, there have been quite a few games set in this universe, primarily on older platforms. There is one relatively recent title called “Avatar: The Last Airbender: Quest for Balance“, but I must admit that it didn’t quite live up to my expectations.

Just like those side comics, many of the earlier games I’ve played are set within the timeline of the TV show, such as “Avatar: The Last Airbender” from 2006. In this game, you can take command of characters like Aang, Sokka, Katara – but not Toph, unfortunately. Instead, you control Haru, an earthbender, because this first game is centered around Book 1 of the series. Do you remember him?

The original game is quite basic, and its follow-ups, titled “The Burning Earth” and “Into the Inferno“, share similar gameplay mechanics. These sequels recount incidents from Books 2 and 3, respectively. Notably, the handheld versions of these games were distinct in terms of visual style and gameplay, resembling Role-Playing Games (RPGs) more closely than their predecessor.

Apart from them, you could enjoy games similar to “Avatar Bobble Battle,” a title that leaned towards tower defense strategy, and the puzzle-centric “Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Path of Zuko.” If you’re up for more excitement, you might like playing characters from Avatar in “Nickelodeon Kart Racers 2: Grand Prix,” where Aang and Katara can race alongside other popular characters such as Spongebob and Lincoln Loud (from the show “Loud House”).

If you enjoy playing fighting games, consider trying out Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, where you can pick characters like Aang, Toph, and Korra. By the way, if you’re a fan of Korra, there was a game by PlatinumGames set between Books 2 and 3 of the series, but it’s quite challenging to find these days (the Nintendo DS version, although distinct, is more readily available).

Apart from diving into numerous online games such as “Clash of the Benders” and “Barge Barrage,” which are inspired by “The Last Airbender” series, I must admit I haven’t found any particularly impressive ones. Regrettably, these games seem to cater more towards dedicated fans rather than the general public. In other words, there are numerous video games based on “The Last Airbender,” but they may not live up to expectations for most players.

The Fanfiction

You may not be surprised to learn that there’s an abundance of fan-written stories based on the movie ‘Avatar’. If you’re interested, you might find a wealth of material on Wattpad, written by fellow enthusiasts that you can explore.

Instead, let me emphasize that I’d like to concentrate mainly on an independent fan creation titled “The Legend of Genji“. Although it isn’t connected with the official series in any manner, I believe it holds a quality nearly equal to those produced by the authorized projects.

The narrative revolves around the next successor to Korra, who is a sandbender, and there are five installments in this series. However, it seems the show has been terminated, so be aware of that. Despite the cancellation, it’s fascinating to see how enthusiastic fans have become, coming up with entirely new content on their own as they continue to crave more material.

The M. Night Shyamalan Movie

To round off, let’s discuss the controversial film “The Last Airbender,” directed by M. Night Shyamalan, which Alexandra Ramos, an avid fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender, finds to be his most disappointing work. Many others share this viewpoint as well.

As a gamer, I’ve got to admit that this movie has received some harsh criticism from fellow fans, and for good reason. Despite its historical significance within the franchise, I can understand why they dislike it. While it does a decent job adapting Book 1 of the series, it just doesn’t quite hit the mark in terms of feel.

There’s also the matter of whitewashing, which was controversial at the time, but that only made it imperative that Netflix got it right when it came to casting Asian roles for the live-action show.

Essentially, my point is that the film doesn’t excel in quality, but it offers a unique intrigue that warrants attention, especially for devoted enthusiasts who might want to give it a single viewing.

Hope you enjoyed the recommendations! Stay fluid, people.
