As Elsbeth's New Lieutenant Threatens To Ruin Kaya's Living Situation, I Get What Carrie Preston Meant About 'Rubbing People The Wrong Way'

As a seasoned gamer of TV series, I can’t help but feel like a seasoned detective myself when it comes to Elsbeth. After years of binge-watching shows and navigating through countless plot twists, I’ve grown accustomed to the unexpected. But even for this old dog, Lt. Connor has managed to teach me a new trick or two!

During the fall 2024 TV lineup, Elsbeth’s mini series won’t have a new episode on Thanksgiving, but it will return in December to air a holiday-themed episode. The storyline from the latest episode is expected to be carried forward, as Lt. Connor’s vigilant gaze is causing tension for Pierce at work and potentially disrupting Kaya’s living situation with Elsbeth. Although Elsbeth and Kaya are trying to abide by roommate rules, it appears that Elsbeth might not be charging Kaya her fair share of rent, which could lead to issues within the NYPD.

From my perspective, I can understand why Carrie Preston mentioned that the new lieutenant might ruffle some feathers. Similarly, showrunner Jonathan Tolins’ preview hinted at an intriguing new character. If I, as a fan, had hoped for a smooth sail after Noonan’s departure, the upcoming fall finale of Season 2 certainly puts those hopes to rest! The TV schedule for 2025 is shaping up to be quite turbulent.

I had a chat with Carrie Preston recently as we approached Season 2, discussing various topics from Elsbeth’s bond with Kaya to the intriguing cliffhanger in the Season 2 premiere (which you can revisit by subscribing to Paramount+). During our conversation, I inquired about her character being assigned an office and accepted into the NYPD. Preston hinted at a character who will be revealed as Lt. Connor.

Regarding the office, it’s delightful to have a bit more room to work comfortably. [laughs] However, a fresh lieutenant arrives and brings a different vibe to the situation. It won’t always be smooth sailing when you’re not a detective and are navigating crime scenes as if you were. That’s bound to irritate some people.

At first, I assumed the new lieutenant would lean towards a more antagonistic role, perhaps not quite as malevolent as Noonan was during Season 1, and it could be said that he might ruffle some feathers significantly, but to keep spoilers at bay, let me put it this way: the lieutenant comes across as an officer who is resolute about adhering to the rules. He’s not necessarily in the wrong for his actions… it’s just that Wagner, Kaya, and Elsbeth don’t seem to find him particularly enjoyable.

In the penultimate episode before the break, Pamela Adlon’s portrayal of a renowned chef turned murderer particularly resonated with me. Prior to the Season 2 premiere, showrunner Jonathan Tolins had hinted at Adlon’s appearance, and he also gave us some insights about what we could anticipate from the new season. When I inquired last October about the potential trouble brewing from the new lieutenant, Tolins disclosed:

A remarkable actor named Daniel Isaac portrays Lieutenant Connor in the series, who might be recognized from Billions. What sets him apart is his enigmatic nature; despite being strict, rule-bound, and tough, there’s an endearing quality to him that also hints at vulnerability. As we progress through the story, we’re discovering various facets of this complex character.

Elsbeth is now five episodes deep into Season 2, with the sixth episode scheduled for release on December 5th. It remains uncertain if the series will delve further into Connor’s character in the near future. Notably, while Elsbeth and her team might not appreciate the stickler, this sentiment does not seem to be shared by the returning cast members or Daniel Isaac. Here’s a peek:

Compared to dealing with Lt. Connor, how did Carrie Preston find it when she had to handle Noonan and her secrets during Season 1? In preparation for Season 2, a connection was established between Elsbeth and Wagner, which may further strengthen as the series progresses. Carrie Preston mentioned this in an interview.

She feels a sense of liberation as she no longer needs to hide her true intentions. Now, she can focus on performing her duties efficiently and effectively, having successfully navigated the challenges with Wagner and Noonan. Moreover, she played a crucial role in preventing Wagner from being unfairly punished for a crime he didn’t commit. This shared understanding and admiration they have for each other is evident. I believe their relationship will deepen into a close friendship.

In Season 2, Wagner has become more amicable, showing goodwill through activities like organizing a raffle for lunch and hosting a poker night. It’s debatable whether Lt. Connor will be invited to a poker game at Wagner’s home in the near future, but it’s clear now why Carrie Preston remarked that Connor can irritate others, as well as understanding Jonathan Tolins’ hints about him being stern and strict in his adherence to rules.

At the moment, you can definitely look forward to seeing Elsbeth on Thursday, December 5th at 10 p.m. ET, on CBS, right after Kathy Bates’ Matlock. The episode will have a festive atmosphere, as a celebrity Christmas curator meets an untimely end due to a murder, leaving only one in the end. As described by CBS, the episode will also include a surprise for Elsbeth, so don’t forget to watch it!
