Over several decades, a continuous rivalry has taken place between DC and Marvel in the realm of superhero comics. These two titans of the superhero world have produced some of the medium’s most enduring characters, and although there’s no need to take sides, many enthusiasts find themselves choosing one over the other. This is true even though numerous actors and filmmakers, like James Gunn, have contributed to both parties.
Following the success of three stellar “Guardians of the Galaxy” films, James Gunn has taken on a joint leadership role at DC Studios and helmed the inaugural movie in the upcoming DC cinematic universe, titled “Superman.” Notably, James’ brother, Sean Gunn, who collaborated with him on the “Guardians” series, has also joined this transition and will portray Maxwell Lord within the DC Universe. According to reports, his debut is slated for the “Superman” cast. Despite this shift, Sean expressed his readiness to rejoin Marvel in future projects if the chance presents itself, stating: “I’m open to working with Marvel again, should the opportunity arise.
Previously, you hinted at departing from Marvel and venturing elsewhere, and I must admit, that sounds plausible. However, should they reach out to me, rest assured, the conversation won’t end with a click of the hang-up button.
Prior to his work with both Marvel and DC, James Gunn had never been partial to comic book rivalries. Instead, he appreciated all characters, a sentiment shared by his brother. It’s unnecessary for fans to choose allegiance to either side.
As a working actor, Sean Gunn acknowledges that a significant aspect of his job is continuously seeking new opportunities. Although there may be valid reasons to decline a role occasionally, he doesn’t always have the luxury to refuse good offers. If the chance arises for him to work with Marvel and DC simultaneously, he’s more than willing, even though he isn’t anticipating such an opportunity at this stage. He added:
As a performer, I’m often showcasing projects and seeking new opportunities [laughs]. Absolutely, I’d be happy to discuss my endeavors! However, being by the phone isn’t my usual posture, nor am I necessarily counting on that scenario. Generally speaking, I don’t count on it. But, of course, nothing is ever ruled out completely.
In the final credits of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, there was a hint suggesting Star-Lord’s future, but his individual spotlight may imply no immediate reunions for the Guardians of the Galaxy team. Should they be summoned again, it would mean additional tasks for Gunn, as he not only plays Kraglin but also stands in for Rocket Raccoon physically when needed.
