On Friday, independent filmmaker and screenwriter Baena passed away at his residence in Los Angeles, as confirmed by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office. He was 47 years old.
Baena had his major opportunity when he collaborated on writing the movie “I Heart Huckabees” (2004), which was directed by David O. Russell. This film received a nomination for the Gotham Award in the category of Best Feature.
For a span of three years, he was in a relationship with Plaza. Then, in 2014, she appeared in his first directorial project, “Life After Beth“, which he had also penned. This movie was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. Throughout their partnership, they collaborated on five films such as “The End of Love” (2012), “The Little Hours” (2017) and “Spin Me Round” (2022).
In 2016, I was part of another movie titled “Joshy,” which premiered at Sundance and even earned a nomination from the Grand Jury. On the small screen, I had a hand in creating, directing, and producing an anthology series called “Cinema Toast” that debuted on Showtime in 2021.
Plaza got married to Baena in the year 2021. However, she decided not to attend Sunday’s Golden Globes as a tribute after his unfortunate demise.
