It’s possible that Joe Russo has dropped a significant hint about “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” which could alter the way these upcoming movies are viewed by both fans and critics. The anticipation for the next two “Avengers” films is higher than ever, as the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) no longer appears as invincible as it did during the final days of the Infinity Saga, especially since the Russo brothers have recently produced “The Electric State,” a film that was both critically and financially unsuccessful. Many fans are hesitant about “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars” reaching the level of box office and critical success that “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame” achieved. However, it appears that these films may not be aiming to be grand finales like their predecessors, but rather the beginning of a new chapter.
During a chat with The Omelette (through Heroic Hollywood), Russo discussed the upcoming Avengers movies. He pointed out that unlike Infinity War and Endgame, which were the epic conclusion of the Infinity Saga, Doomsday and Secret Wars mark a fresh start for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As Joe Russo stated, these films symbolize “a new beginning. We told an ending story. Now we’re going to tell a beginning story.
Have We Been Looking at ‘Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars’ All Wrong?
Since it was revealed that “Avengers: Doomsday” (originally “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty”) and “Avengers: Secret Wars” will conclude the Multiverse Saga instead of each Phase ending with an “Avengers” film like the Infinity Saga, fans have had certain expectations about what these movies might entail. It appeared to be a grand finale for a storyline that received varied responses and was told at a faster pace than the Infinity Saga.
The upcoming two “Avengers” movies are expected to conclude the Multiverse Saga, but instead of serving as a grand farewell like “Infinity War” and “Endgame”, they might function more as a significant expansion or new chapter. In essence, it seems that the entire Multiverse Saga may have been similar to Phase 1 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the original Avengers film marking the beginning of a fresh wave of stories.
It’s possible that the movies “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars” could conclude the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Multiverse Saga and usher in a new phase for Phase 7. This is because while “Avengers: Endgame” was promoted as the grand finale, it actually laid the groundwork for stories continued in shows like “WandaVision,” “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” “Loki,” and “Hawkeye.” Therefore, it served as both a conclusion and a new beginning.
It’s quite plausible that “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars” could bring closure to significant storylines from the Multiverse Saga, while also hinting at new, intriguing developments such as the introduction of the X-Men or the progression of ongoing narratives from this current saga, like the emergence of The Young Avengers and the Midnight Suns. At present, a MCU reboot appears unlikely. However, by the time “Avengers: Secret Wars” releases in cinemas, the MCU will be just one year away from its twentieth anniversary. A franchise lasting twenty years is impressive, so for the MCU to remain captivating, the upcoming “Avengers” films need to present compelling prospects for what lies ahead to keep viewers hooked.
