Avengers Tower Gets a Shocking New Name in Thunderbolts – Fans Are Stunned!

As a die-hard comic book enthusiast, I can hardly contain my excitement and trepidation upon learning that the Avengers Tower has been rechristened, as unveiled by the latest Thunderbolts comic series. The news has left fans like me buzzing with anticipation for what’s to come next in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

The first trailer for Thunderbolts finally put an end to a question that has puzzled MCU fans since 2017: Who bought the Avengers Tower? Ever since it was hinted at in Spider-Man: Homecoming, speculation among fans ran wild, with many guessing that it would be acquired by Wilson Fisk / The Kingpin or Norman Osborn / The Green Goblin. Some were convinced it would serve as the Baxter Building for the MCU’s Fantastic Four before their upcoming film was confirmed to take place in an alternate universe instead.

The movie trailers for “Thunderbolts” have hinted that the old Avengers Tower will play a crucial role, and Empire Magazine has now confirmed that it’s been purchased by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, also known as Val, who renamed it “Watchtower”. The Watchtower is a significant location in comics, connected to the film’s main villain, The Sentry, but it holds importance for the movie too. In an interview with Empire Magazine, director Jake Schreier discussed the symbolism of the former beacon of superheroism in the MCU now being controlled by a questionable character like Val, stating:

We understand the significance of that iconic tower. If there was someone you’d dislike seeing in control of it given its emotional importance to the public, could you imagine that scenario serving as a metaphor for events growing more ominous?

In DC’s Justice League, The Watchtower is their main operational headquarters. However, Marvel Comics also has its equivalent, called simply “Watchtower,” which serves as the base for one of their characters – The Sentry. Interestingly, the original Avengers Tower was constructed on top of The Sentry’s Watchtower following an event where he made people forget his existence. Afterwards, any memory of him was erased from people’s minds. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Lewis Pullman is cast as The Sentry in the upcoming film Thunderbolts. This renaming of Avengers Tower to Watchtower by fans has fueled speculation that The Sentry was created by the government as a new superhero, with potential control mechanisms in place.

The Watchtower’s MCU Significance, Explained

Since Val first appeared in “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” in 2021, she’s been a mysterious character with ulterior motives. Apart from her appearance on Disney+, she also showed up in “Black Widow” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” It was later unveiled that she holds the position of CIA chief within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The upcoming storylines for Watchtower and the superhero Sentry seem to expand on the MCU’s ongoing narratives from “Wakanda Forever” and “Captain America: Brave New World,” where multiple nations are vying for new weapons and powers to defend themselves in an Avengers-less world. It looks like Val is exploiting symbols of heroes that the world cherishes, with plans to pervert their power for her own super-empowered purposes.

In the latest phase of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), films like “Thunderbolts,” “Captain America: Brave New World,” “Thor: Love & Thunder,” “Black Widow,” and “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” are delving into the past to shed light on the future. The Thunderbolts’ battle with the Sentry in “Thunderbolts” has finally provided an answer to a question fans have pondered for eight years, while “Captain America: Brave New World” is wrapping up plot threads from “The Incredible Hulk” and “Eternals.” The future of Avengers Tower, now called Watchtower, is uncertain after its battles with Loki and Ultron. Will it survive the Thunderbolts’ fight against the Sentry? Or could the MCU lose one of its iconic landmarks before the grand finale of the Multiverse Saga begins in “Avengers: Doomsday”? Fans will learn this summer.
