In the game developed by Obsidian Entertainment, titled “Avowed“, a fresh group of companions for the protagonist’s journey has been unveiled, sparking excitement among players. Similar to many other games featuring switchable companions, you can engage with them in various ways such as training, delving into their histories, and even fostering romantic relationships! To make sure you fully leverage every companion, I have compiled an all-encompassing guide that covers everything essential about each one.
Complete Avowed Companion Guide
In the game called “Avowed,” you’ll be traveling alongside beings resembling gods. Along the way, you might pick up a few short-term travelers during certain missions, but they’ll depart once their tasks are completed. The permanent members of your team, however, will remain with you throughout your journey.
- Kai
- Marius
- Giatta
- Yatzli
Kai
In the mystical land of Paradis, Kai, my top pick among companions, will greet you upon your arrival. He’s an aumaua, his unique greenish-blue skin and shark-like teeth setting him apart. But don’t let his menacing appearance fool you – he’s more than just a fierce warrior. In tense moments, Kai proves to be the voice of reason, guiding us through difficult conversations and decisions. If our bond deepens over time, we can train together in unique ways, and perhaps even nurture a romantic connection with him.
Unlocking Kai’s Training
To gain access to Kai’s training in the narrative, it is essential to converse with him repeatedly during the camp phase of the story. Over time, you will encounter a dialog choice such as “‘We discussed training together.’“. During these conversations, you may have an opportunity to boost one of three distinct attributes based on your chosen dialogue options.
Dialogue Option | Stat |
---|---|
Top Option | Two Constitution Points |
Middle Option | Two Might Points |
Bottom Option | One Might Point and One Constitution Point |
How to Romance Kai
In the game “Avowed”, Kai is the only character you can develop a romantic relationship with. To initiate this relationship, you should embark on his personal quest named ‘Battle Scars’. During this quest, whenever Kai seeks your guidance, opt for responses that comfort him. Upon completing the quest, seek out Kai at a camp and engage in conversation. If appropriate options are presented, select either “Don’t we seem to have grown quite close, haven’t we?” as a question to further deepen your connection.
After that query, opt for the dialogue choice, “I’ve grown quite fond of you,” which translates to “Kai, I want you to know that I have feelings for you.” This conversation doesn’t impact the game mechanics, but certain visuals during the end-of-game cinematics may differ.
Best Abilities for Kai
As a devoted fan, I’ve tailored Kai’s abilities to suit my gaming style, and it’s proven effective throughout my adventure. The companion ability points I accrued for him were strategically invested in his Fire and Ice skills, as well as Second Wind.
- Fire and Ice – Using his gun, Kai shoots and stuns enemies for ten seconds. As it levels up, he will be able to ignite targets, increase the amount of stun health, and reduce its cooldown by 50%.
- Second Wind – With a cooldown of two minutes, the ability allows Kai to revive himself when he’s at zero, restoring 50% of his health. As you level this ability up, he will be able to earn back 75% of his health, gain a temporary burst of Attack Speed, and the ability to reset all other ability cooldowns for Kai.
Marius
In the gaming world I inhabit, I’ve come across a character named Marius – he’s a hard nut to win over. He’s got this gruff dwarf persona that’s as tough as stone and prefers the wilderness for his training grounds. Anything that even hints at being artificial or related to animacy just doesn’t sit well with him.
There’s an air of conservatism about him, which makes him slow to trust others. But once he does, it’s a bond that lasts. However, unlike my other gaming companion Kai, Marius isn’t someone you can develop romantic feelings for. He’s got his own path, and I’m just here to follow along.
Unlocking Marius’ Training
As a gamer, I discovered that to get training from Marius, I needed to delve into his past by engaging him in conversation. However, he seemed reluctant to share, brushing off all my inquiries. Yet, I persisted, knowing it would be crucial when we reached the game’s final zone, Galawain’s Tusks. There, I was finally able to complete Marius’ companion quest, Chorus of the Lost. It was only after this quest that Marius started opening up to me, and training became an option in our dialogue.
Dialogue Option | Stat |
---|---|
Top Option | Two Constitution Points |
Middle Option | Two Dexterity Points |
Bottom Option | One Might Point and One Constitution Point |
Best Abilities for Marius
Among the skills, I believe it would be most advantageous to allocate Marius’ ability points towards Deep Rooted Connection and Soul Sensing.
- Binding Roots – Binding Roots allows Marius to Root enemies for eight seconds and has a 20-second cooldown. As you upgrade the ability, he will be able to stun trapped enemies, trap multiple enemies, and deal Bleed Accumulation to those enemies.
- Heart Seeker – Heart Seeker gives Marius a ranged advantage in shooting faraway enemies. Eventually, he will be able to hit a secondary target, increase the damage dealt by the ability, and reduce its cooldown by 33%.
Giatta
Giatta arrives shortly following her exile from the city of Fior mes Iverno. As an animancer, she has vowed to apply her powers solely towards noble purposes, having tragically lost her parents in a devastating incident.
Unlocking Giatta’s Training
Unlike the other two characters, Giatta doesn’t require a specific quest to start training with her. Instead, you can initiate training with her shortly after recruiting her by simply approaching her at camp and checking if she offers a dialogue option. If not, try talking to her more about various topics, particularly her past, as this may make the option available. However, please note that Giatta is not a romantic option in the game.

Dialogue Option | Stat |
---|---|
Top Option | Two Intellect Points |
Middle Option | Two Resolve Points |
Bottom Option | One Resolve Point and One Intellect Point |
Best Abilities for Giatta
In my playthrough, the best abilities for Giatta are Purification and Reconstruction.
- Purification – With this ability, Giatta can heal allies by 25% of their max health. As the ability progresses, she will be able to heal allies for 50%, knock back enemies, and increase damage reduction of allies by 20%.
- Reconstruction – With Reconstruction, all of Giatta’s attacks heal allies a little. By putting more points into the ability, Giatta can increase the health granted to allies by 20%, grant Temporary Health for allies at max health, and revive incapacitated allies.
Yatzli
Yatzli is a pink-hued, fluffy Orlan hailing from the land of Fior. Her primary focus lies almost entirely in animancy, and she’s quite nimble. However, there are moments when her eagerness gets the better of her, making her somewhat impulsive.
Unlocking Yatzli’s Training
Similar to Giatta, she doesn’t require a particular task to be accomplished before her training becomes available. You can ask Yatzli to train with you right after recruiting her. If you’re finding it hard to access this option, I suggest engaging her in more conversations at the camp until the opportunity arises.

Dialogue Option | Stat |
---|---|
Top Option | Two Perception Points |
Middle Option | Two Intellect Points |
Bottom Option | One Perception Point and One Intellect Point |
Best Abilities for Yatzli
The best abilities for Yatzli in my opinion are Essence Explosion and Blast.
- Essence Explosion – With Essence Explosion, Yatzli can invoke arcane power that explodes when it hits an enemy. Eventually, she can increase the size of the blast, deal fire damage, and reduce its cooldown by 33%.
- Blast – Blast allows Yatzli to burst into a small area, dealing damage. As more points are put into it, Yatzli will be able to deal Explosive Damage, increase the stun dealt to enemies, and have a chance to inflict elemental damage.
