Awol Erizku Presents ‘Quaquaversal’ Exhibition At Ben Brown Fine Arts in Hong Kong

As a passionate admirer of contemporary art and a fervent advocate for the representation of marginalized voices, I have been absolutely captivated by Awol Erizku’s latest exhibition, “Quaquaversal.” Having traversed the globe to witness the rich tapestry of human creativity, this showcase at Ben Brown Fine Arts in Hong Kong ranks among my most treasured experiences.

Awol Erizku, an artist from Los Angeles, has revealed his newest exhibit titled “Quaquaversal” with Ben Brown Fine Arts. This exhibition further develops Erizku’s connection with Hong Kong and showcases a variety of mediums, including paintings, neon installations, and a fresh series of bronze statues. The artwork extends the artist’s discussions on materiality, symbolism, and cultural influence, all while honoring African diasporic identity.

At this exhibit, the artist reimagines and reworks themes from music, mainstream culture, and sports, weaving intricate stories that emphasize an Afrocentric viewpoint. A notable aspect is a set of five bronze statues representing Queen Nefertiti combined with various items, symbolizing ongoing discussions about cultural autonomy and the disputed representation of Nefertiti’s likeness.

In the art exhibition titled Quaquaversal, Erizku delves into the themes of “Street Hieroglyphics” and corporate logos, seamlessly blending mechanical precision with human expression. Utilizing bold colors and robust materials, this artist’s work offers a critique of the hidden political and societal messages embedded within these symbols.

Beyond that, the neon exhibits such as “The New World is Yours (2024),” radiate with cultural significance, converting commercial emblems into potent conversation starters about autonomy and destiny. With these pieces, Erizku pushes against traditional art norms and cultural possession, redefining dialogues surrounding identity, ancestry, and power in a globalized society.

Awol Erizku’s artwork titled “Quaquaversal” will continue to be displayed at Ben Brown Fine Arts in Hong Kong up until January 25th, 2025.
