Ayo Edebiri Joins A24’s Barney Movie: My Guess on Her Role

Have you ever imagined discussing A24 and Barney in the same conversation? Not me, but here we are! The independent film company is producing a Barney movie with Mattel, and Get Out’s Daniel Kaluuya through his 59% Productions banner. The latest development for this upcoming A24 production involves The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri joining the project to work on Barney. As for my desired role for her in the beloved purple dinosaur’s movie, I’ve already got one in mind!

To start with the essential details, it’s been confirmed that Edebiri is penning the script for the upcoming Barney film, and discussions are ongoing for her to also appear in the production. Back in October 2019, A24 and Kaluuya’s association with the project was announced, and since then, Kaluuya has hinted at his curiosity about delving into the concept of whether the song “I Love You” from the original TV show is actually true. Robbie Brenner from Mattel Films shared (via Entertainment Weekly) that the Barney movie will present a fresh take on the character, one that will catch viewers off guard and challenge expectations. Mattel CEO Anon Kreiz described this new approach as amusing, engaging, and culturally relevant – not an unusual film.

As an avid fan, I was thrilled when I heard about the Barney revival, eagerly anticipating the return of my childhood favorite. But, to my surprise and dismay, the new version has stirred up quite a storm among fans like me due to a significant change in one of the popular characters – and yes, I must admit, I’m feeling a bit annoyed by it too!

Ayo Edebiri, the director of an episode on The Bear, shares insight into how this particular episode was selected and why it held such personal significance for her.

The classic TV series “Barney & Friends,” which aired from 1992 to 2010, showcased numerous young actors playing alongside characters like Barney, Baby Bop, and BJ, including Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez. If things go as planned with Ayo Edebiri joining the project following its creation, I envision her taking on a role that fits my ideal: a character who used to spend time with Barney as a child, maintaining an optimistic disposition, but later in life, faced the hardships of adulthood and became disillusioned.

Despite Barney‘s storyline being unclear at this point, it’s plausible to think that it might revolve around the dinosaur re-entering the main character’s life after many years apart. This scenario mirrors the plot of 2018’s Christopher Robin, where Winnie the Pooh and other characters from the Hundred Acre Wood returned. Edebiri would excel at portraying a character who has faced hardships in life but could be uplifted by Barney’s optimism. However, she would also be smart enough to recognize that everyday life often brings difficulties which are absent in Barney’s world.

In a slightly different phrasing: Not all A24 films are rated R, but I believe the upcoming Barbie movie, another adaptation from Mattel, will likely be PG-13. This rating gives room to delve deeply into the content without making it unsuitable for younger audiences. As for Barney, given that A24 productions often have a unique quirkiness, we can expect some level of peculiarity in this film. I’m optimistic that the script by Ayo Edebiri will strike the right balance, and there’s even speculation she might appear on screen as well for Barney.
