Azealia Banks Sends Cease & Desist Letter to Matty Healy Demanding $1 Million in Damages

As a long-time fan of both Azealia Banks and The 1975, I find myself deeply saddened by the turn of events between these two talented artists. It seems like social media feuds have become the norm in today’s music industry, but this one feels particularly harsh.

On Sunday, Azealia Banks made public a letter from her lawyers that was sent to Matty Healy of The 1975, asking for a sincere apology in the open and a $1 million compensation.

The letter was written following a heated dispute between two musicians, which had been brewing since earlier this week when Healy resurrected his old social media platform. This reactivation sparked a response from Banks after she commented on Charli XCX’s looks, saying “Charli XCX used to be soooo pretty.” Healy then retorted by stating that the women Banks attacks are all significant figures, attractive, contentious, and kind. He suggested that this makes Banks envious because of her immense talent, but everything else about her is unsuccessful. He simply advised Banks to rap instead.

In response to Healy’s offensive remark, the banks retaliated by stating that he and his fiancée, model Gabbriette, “both resemble drug users who share needles.” This comment led Healy to threaten, “I will give you such a hard slap that I might set a Guinness World Record for the highest a rat has ever flown when some bitch hits a wig.

Healy then apologized for the threats in a statement online and deactivated his account.

Banking on the past, Banks has been known to hurl offensive remarks through social media platforms. Similarly, Healy has a record of such behavior, with numerous instances of racially insensitive statements being recorded.

The letter, which Banks posted on her X account last Saturday, December 7, from Wallace J. Collins III in New York City, states that it’s a reaction to the “threats of aggressive behavior” expressed by Healy.

On Sunday, Collins told The Hollywood Reporter that a letter was dispatched from his office to Healy on Saturday evening.

As a gamer, I’d put it this way: “I’ve got screenshots of the offensive attacks you’ve hurled at my client, including racial slurs and threats of violence, which you posted online for all to see. These actions of yours have been harmful, malicious, and done in bad faith, seriously damaging my client’s reputation and continuing to do so.” -Collins

The letter goes on to say, “Deleting the harmful comments and admitting that your response was wrong doesn’t erase the harm, but it serves as proof of your acknowledgment of responsibility.

He went on to note that he had drafted a summons and complaint per Banks’ request, but that “I have usually found it beneficial for all parties to try to resolve such matters amicably without the need for court intervention.”

The conclusion of the letter requires Healy to stop making derogatory comments about Banks instantly, and it further asks him to swiftly issue a public apology to her. Additionally, it insists on a monetary compensation of $1 million as full reparation for this incident.
