As a fan who had the privilege of witnessing Aziza Barnes’ extraordinary talent unfold, I am left with a profound sense of loss and sorrow. Their work was a breathtaking tapestry woven from the threads of their experiences, a testament to the power of art as a means of healing, understanding, and connecting with others.
32-year-old Aziza Barnes, a writer known for her work on series such as ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ and ‘Snowfall’, has tragically passed away.
On December 15th, Z – who went by they/them pronouns and was dearly loved as such by friends – tragically took their own life. This heartbreaking news was shared by the family through a representative to The Hollywood Reporter. At this time, no additional information has been made available.
We sadly announce that our cherished artist, Aziza ‘Z’ Barnes, has sadly passed away. This remarkable person was much more than an artist – they were a child, sibling, and friend. Their influence on countless people within their community and industry will be felt for a long time. They left behind memories and works that will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
Once the statement was finalized, it read, ‘Z’s exceptional skill leaves us seeking insight in their words. As we mourn this loss, our heartfelt wishes go out for solace and empathy.’
Safia Elhillo, a longtime companion of Barnes, expressed feelings about Z on her Substack, saying, “My dearly departed friend was an exceptionally talented writer and genre-bending artist who left us far too early, leaving behind a whole community mourning. I’m still struggling to find the words to express my own sorrow,” Elhillo admitted before posting a poem that her friend had penned when they were young.
Born in Los Angeles in October 1992, Barnes completed their bachelor’s degree in fine arts from New York University and later pursued a master’s in fine arts at the University of Mississippi. They have also written for various shows including an upcoming Game of Thrones prequel titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Snowfall, Rap Shit, and Teenage Bounty Hunter. Additionally, they have published several collections of poetry.
They belonged to both NYU’s Poetry Slam group and The Dance Cartel. Barnes’ poetry earned them the title of ‘Best Poet in the Nation’ in 2011, as well as numerous other accolades throughout their career in this field.
