As a passionate fan of groundbreaking television, I couldn’t be more thrilled about Nava Mau’s historic Emmy nomination for her role as Teri in “Baby Reindeer.” Her powerful and transformative performance has left an indelible mark on me, and it’s truly awe-inspiring to witness this trailblazing Latina trans actress make history.
Baby Reindeer actress Nava Mau has made history with her brand new Emmy nomination.
On Wednesday, Mau was announced as a nominee for Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie at the Emmy Awards. This marks a historic first for a Latina trans actress in this category. Sharing the nomination with Mau are her co-star Jessica Gunning, along with Dakota Fanning (“Ripley”), Lily Gladstone (“Under the Bridge”), Aja Naomi King (“Lessons in Chemistry”), Diane Lane (“Feud: Capote vs. The Swans”), and Kali Reis (“True Detective: Night Country”).
In a heartwarming yet unsettling turn of events, the tender interaction between struggling comedian Richard Gadd (portrayed by himself), known as Donny Dunn, and a solitary woman at his workplace bar leads to an unexpected revelation. Martha, played by Gunning, is unmasked as a perilous serial stalker. Over an extended period of several years, she inundated Donny with countless emails, tweets, letters, and even 350 hours worth of voicemails. Joining the fray is Mau, who previously graced the screens in Max comedy “Generation,” as Donny’s transgender girlfriend Teri. Unfortunately, Teri becomes entangled in this chaotic situation.
The popular Netflix show gained significant recognition at the Emmy Awards with a total of 11 nominations in the category of limited or anthology series.
Mau shared at a May FYC event that she spent the entire night writing in her journal after receiving the show’s script. The experience deeply resonated with her and stayed with her. She also discussed how playing the role helped her confront suppressed emotions. As a trans woman and Latina, Mau had long prioritized caring for others’ feelings over her own to survive. Therefore, portraying a character who was unapologetically emotional was an empowering experience for her, allowing her to reconnect with her body.
On September 15, the Emmy Awards ceremony of the 76th edition will be aired live on ABC. The event will take place at the Peacock Theater in L.A. Live. If you miss the live broadcast, don’t worry! You can still watch it the following day on Hulu.
