Wow, it’s quite the quest! We’re on a mission to discover the guitar that Marty McFly strummed for ’50s high school students during the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance in the movie Back to the Future. This iconic film is turning 40 this coming summer.
The legendary guitar, the Cherry Red Gibson ES-345 which is believed to have influenced Chuck Berry in creating “Johnny B. Goode,” seems to have vanished over time – figuratively speaking! Now, it’s fans who are tasked with tracking it down. This appeal was made by director and co-writer Robert Zemeckis, co-writer/producer Bob Gale, as well as actors Michael J. Fox (Marty), Christopher Lloyd (Doc Brown), Lea Thompson (Lorraine McFly), and Harry Waters Jr. (Marvin Berry) in a video released by Gibson this week.
Gale stated that long ago, I was shocked to find out that a treasured movie masterpiece seemed to vanish in the realm of space and time. Given that we don’t possess a working time machine, this endeavor might be our most promising approach to unraveling an enigma that has puzzled us for decades.
Todd Harapiak, Media Director at Gibson, commented that the memorable portrayal of ‘Johnny B. Goode’ by Michael J. Fox in the Enchantment Under the Sea dance scene from ‘Back to the Future’ struck a deep chord with an entire generation of young people, motivating many to try playing the guitar for the first time. This scene has had a profound and lasting effect on musicians throughout the years, and we are excited to start a quest to discover the guitar that has carried the legacy of both film and rock history for close to four decades.

For those believing they may have found clues regarding the mythical artifact, feel free to dial 1-855-345-1955 or pay a visit to LostToTheFuture.com. Dialing this hotline, with the final four digits mirroring the year Marty traveled back to in his DeLorean, will play a pre-recorded message from Fox, who politely requests your name, contact number, and details about the location of the guitar.
Furthermore, Doc Crotzer (a seasoned Hollywood editor who’s worked on projects ranging from Glee to the latest remake of Road House) is currently immersed in the production of a documentary by Gibson, titled Lost to the Future. This film, narrated by Mark Agnesi, Gibson’s Head of Brand Experience, will include exclusive interviews with Fox, Lloyd, Thompson, Waters Jr., Bob Gale, Huey Lewis (“The Power of Love,” “Back in Time”), and other renowned musicians influenced by the iconic movie.
This film inspired me to become a filmmaker, and a particular scene prompted me to learn guitar for the first time,” Crotzer expressed. “Being kids of the ’80s, it is our responsibility to invite music enthusiasts, movie fans, and true crime documentary aficionados on this unbelievable journey with us as we hunt for the Excalibur of our generation.
17 years after embarking on a quest, Agnesi was thrilled to announce her intention to unite the entire guitar community in a collaborative effort to discover the guitar that sparked her passion for playing and inspired countless other guitarists from her generation to learn.
In the meantime, people are starting to guess if this is simply a smart promotional strategy to generate excitement for a limited-edition collector’s version of the guitar, released to celebrate the movie’s 40th anniversary. If that’s the case, the documentary could potentially be offered as an exclusive perk for buyers.
