Background Performer at Kendrick Lamar Halftime Show Arrested Over Gaza Sudan Flag

Four months following Kendrick Lamar‘s Super Bowl Halftime Show in New Orleans, which took place in February, the backup performer who unexpectedly displayed a flag as protest for Sudan and Gaza was taken into custody, according to Louisiana State Police. This confirmation was made public on Thursday.

41-year-old local resident Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu was taken into custody by authorities for allegedly obstructing an officer and causing a disturbance in public by interrupting a legal gathering. The police stated that Nantambu turned himself in following consultation with his lawyer. Unfortunately, a representative for Nantambu could not be contacted. In a previous interview with NBC News after the incident in February, Nantambu explained that he used the flag to draw attention to “the plight of humanity.” On Thursday, the police disclosed that they found out he was employed as an extra performer during the halftime show. Through collaboration with the National Football League, Troopers discovered that Nantambu had been granted access to the field for the performance, but lacked authorization to express himself in such a manner.

In the heart of New Orleans’ Halftime Show last February, Nantambu took the spotlight by unfurling the flag atop a black Buick GNX parked on the field. For a moment, he held the flag aloft high above him. However, security intervened shortly following this action.

On Thursday, authorities reported that during half-time, Nantambu was caught sprinting onto the field waving a flag, disrupting the event. Quickly identifying this unsanctioned act, security personnel and law enforcement officials intervened when Nantambu refused to heed their instructions to halt his actions. They successfully detained him afterward.

At a previous point, the NFL announced that an individual, who was unnamed at the time, had been permanently barred from all NFL venues and events. The statement further explained that this person concealed the object on their body and revealed it during the show, with no one involved in production being aware of the person’s intentions. Roc Nation stated that the demonstration was neither prearranged nor part of the performance, and it had never been rehearsed.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but marvel at the fact that Lamar’s electrifying halftime performance broke records, racking up an astounding average of 133.5 million viewers, making it the most-watched halftime show in history!
