Backpack Attack is definitely one of the games of all time

  • Backpack Attack: Troll Face is certainly a game
  • But a rarely-seen gameplay loop inspired by an indie darling is dragged down by bizarre aesthetics
  • Tired internet memes don’t do much to make this game stand out

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt and a keen eye for originality, I must confess that Backpack Attack: Troll Face left me feeling somewhat underwhelmed. The gameplay mechanics, inspired by the once-popular Backpack Battles, are not inherently bad, but when paired with an aesthetic that seems to have crawled out from the depths of a forgotten corner of the internet, it’s hard not to feel a bit disappointed.

In a nutshell, by blending inventory organization, weapon creation, and a waning online phenomenon, we arrive at today’s focus: Backpack Attack: Troll Face. This game is an exciting fusion of strategy and tower defense, where players must organize the weapons essential for fending off waves of adversaries within the confined space of their backpack while continuously upgrading to maintain the fight.

As a gamer myself, I can’t help but notice the strong resemblance between Backpack Attack and the beloved game, Backpack Battles, that used to rule Twitch. It’s no secret that imitators are common in the mobile gaming world, and it wouldn’t be fair to criticize a small studio like AppVillage too harshly. However, I feel it’s only right to acknowledge the clear similarities between the two games, especially given the noticeable influence.

Troll Face struggles with repetition, as it shares many aspects with other games. It appears that using game mechanics and making them unique is feasible, but connecting these elements to a less exciting visual theme based on outdated internet memes, particularly troll faces, seems questionable at best.

Instead of comparing this to the flood of “survivor-clone” games, let me say that it resembles a multitude of other games that heavily imitate Poncle’s successful title. Although you might find some flaws in their excessive mimicry, several of these ‘bullet heaven’ games introduced unique or fresh elements visually and added original twists. However, Backpack Attack appears to be an app store creation lacking novelty and innovation.
