The realm of films based on toys is growing at an incredible pace. Following the blockbuster success of Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” it seems that every toy you used to play with as a child is making its way onto the big screen. With brands like Matchbox and even Barney the Dinosaur getting new feature film adaptations, we can expect more to follow suit. The next cherished childhood toy to receive its own live-action movie will be none other than “Bakugan.
According to recent updates, a live-action Bakugan film is in production by Spin Master Corp., the owners of the Bakugan intellectual property. The upcoming movie has secured its main team with Brad Peyton set to write, produce, and direct. Notably, this isn’t his first venture into adapting popular games for live-action films; he previously directed Dwayne Johnson in the 2018 film adaptation of a video game titled Rampage. Additionally, he has worked on movies like San Andreas (2015) starring Dwayne Johnson and the critically panned Netflix sci-fi movie Atlas from 2024, starring Jennifer Lopez.
Peyton expressed his excitement in a statement, stating that Bakugan is poised for its big-screen debut, a task he’s eager to fulfill firsthand. Joining forces with co-writer Lindsay Harbert and the Spin Master team, they’re enthusiastic about crafting a franchise with universal appeal. Peyton believes they will produce an unmissable cinematic experience that accurately captures the extraordinary and epic realm of Bakugan. At present, no release date for the Bakugan movie has been disclosed.
What Is ‘Bakugan’?
2007 saw the inception of the game known as Bakugan by Aldric Saucier. Just a short while later, it was acquired by Spin Master. Throughout the late 2000s and early 2010s, you might have noticed numerous advertisements for this exciting game on your television. In the game, children would place small plastic balls onto metallic cards; these cards would then transform into spherical creatures similar to Transformers, popping up from the cards.
Bakugan has experienced multiple significant transformations over time. In the year 2007, Spin Master collaborated with Sega to jointly produce a Bakugan animated series. Initially planned for 52 episodes, the show gained a dedicated fan base and extended its run, eventually completing 189 episodes spread across four seasons. The anime has been reborn numerous times since then. Although the plot of the upcoming movie is yet to be officially revealed, viewers can gather some hints from the original 2007 anime. Here’s a brief summary of the 2007 anime:
(Note: I have used “a brief summary” instead of “its synopsis reads”)
An extraordinary set of playing cards mysteriously rains down on Earth, spreading everywhere. A tight-knit group of friends – Dan, Bruno, Marucho, Julie, Shun, and Alice – find these peculiar cards. They join forces and transform into the Bakugan Battle Brawlers, called to aid in a cosmic conflict between good and evil in a parallel dimension. As they delve deeper into the mysteries of the cards, they uncover the complex power struggles unfolding in the mirror world of New Vestroia, determined to support the Bakugan there in their struggle for victory.
If you’re eager to get acquainted with the world of Bakugan ahead of its upcoming movie and are keen to avoid splurging on the merchandise, consider watching the 2007 anime, which is now available for free streaming on Plex TV.
