As someone who has been a die-hard fan of the John Wick franchise since its inception, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming release of Ballerina: From the World of John Wick. The teaser for this movie promises an action-packed experience that rivals even the highest kill counts in the series so far!
At CCXP Brasil, a sneak peek for the spin-off titled “Ballerina: Originating from the John Wick Universe” was revealed. This teaser showcases breathtaking action sequences, alongside fresh interviews with the cast, crew, and Keanu Reeves. Notably, it hints at an unprecedented kill count within the franchise, potentially surpassing all previous films in this series. Initially, the original “John Wick” was a story of vengeance, where the protagonist, portrayed by Reeves, sought retribution against the Russian mobsters who stole his car and murdered his pet dog. As events unfolded, Wick was re-immersed in the secret world of assassins, and his kill count escalated significantly across the series. The first film featured 77 kills, which ballooned to an astounding 140 kills in “Chapter 4“. However, the single scene in “Ballerina” seems to have eclipsed the kill counts of the first three movies combined.
In a behind-the-scenes clip, actress Ana de Armas from “Ballerina” talked about the stunning flamethrower sequence featured in the film’s initial trailer. Interestingly, despite the John Wick series being known for action-packed scenes involving horseback shootouts, dragon fire shotgun rounds, motorcycle ninja fights, and Halle Berry with attack dogs, there haven’t been any flamethrowers until now. “Ballerina” is addressing this gap, and it’s doing so spectacularly. According to the featurette, de Armas said, “The flamethrower scene is mind-blowing.” From what we see in the featurette, the main character of “Ballerina” seems to be clearing a room filled with henchmen using a flamethrower, which is already impressive. However, de Armas hinted at a body count that would surpass all expectations.
“The flamethrower scene is insane. I think I burn 106 people.”
For Ana de Armas, filming that scene was just as wild as it appears on-screen. “I only cried for the first one,” she said, looking back on the experience. “The rest of the 105 takes, I was okay.
‘Ballerina’ Is More Than Just A “Female John Wick” Movie
In the making-of video, Len Wiseman addressed a criticism frequently aimed at our movie. Some disappointed and biased fans have dismissed Ballerina as merely a female reinterpretation of John Wick. However, Wiseman clarified that this film presents an entirely fresh narrative, enriching and broadening the intricate universe of John Wick. As he put it, “This is Eve’s story unfolding from the very start.
In the debut trailer, Ana de Armas showcased impressive action skills that had some fans concerned about the spin-off’s adherence to the distinctive fighting style of John Wick. However, it seems that Ana has put in considerable effort in training, as suggested by the sneak peek which hints at numerous extended fight sequences featuring exceptional choreography. According to her co-star, Norman Reedus, “She’s fearless and unyielding.” In the universe of John Wick, the main character is referred to as the Baba Yaga, or someone who is sent to eliminate the Baba Yaga. Ian McShane has given a new moniker to Ana de Armas’ character Eve. He stated:
“John Wick is the Baba Yaga. And Ana, she’s the Baby Yaga.”
