Bandit Running recently revealed its first-ever footwear collaboration with ASICS, a renowned Japanese footwear brand. This partnership was marked by the redesign of the popular Novablast 5 model, which Bandit creatively adapted with inspiration drawn from the artworks of Isamu Noguchi, a Japanese American artist. This design reflects the shared heritage of both collaborating entities, as each has roots in Japan and Los Angeles respectively.
Bandit creatively blends opaque and see-through materials on its shoes, reminiscent of delicate paper lanterns like those still crafted by Noguchi’s studio. The artist’s rock sculptures are hinted at through a gravel-like texture woven into the knitted upper parts, while the side panels showcase sheer, tape-covered layers, symbolizing an abstract Bandit logo.
Red highlights show up at the midsole heel area and near the tongue, drawing inspiration from the Noguchi logo commonly found on original lanterns. The red accents also appear subtly on a co-branded word mark near the toe and continue onto the insoles, which feature a Japanese typographic design. For more unique touches, an industrial-style label is stitched above the toe box, and the tongue sports a sculpted, pleated texture. Each pair comes with a custom Japanese ripstop drawstring bag, complete with a translucent tag holder.
Starting from April 3, Bandit Members have the opportunity to purchase the Bandit x ASICS Novablast 5. However, these shoes will be available for a wider public release on Friday, April 4, at the Bandit online store.
